Back in 2013, the Pharmaceutical Research and Development group, a business unit that is part of Janssen Pharmaceutical, a division of Johnson & Johnson, brought in a new CIO. Almost immediately, the CIO, who came from another big pharmaceutical company, recognized that the IT department needed to change in order to move the company to a position where they could update the systems and applications to keep up with the new technologies available. Not only was the company behind platforms and technology, but, but the existing organization was lacking the skills and competencies needed to bring to organization up to date. The organization was well established, and the majority of the team had over ten years of experience in R&D IT. The leadership team was structured around supporting the various areas of R&D, and included five members. It included one member from each four therapeutic areas of R&D and one member for Regulatory and Compliance. Most of the staff had vertical business knowledge specific to R&D and there was value in that because most of the organization worked side by side with business unit scientists and other professionals. They were able to understand the business unit needs and wants and work with them to find the right technology solutions and platforms. Project management skills were seen as critical to plan, map, and produce favorable results for the business and from a financial perspective. This was an area where the IT organization came up severely lacking.
