Living with Migraines
Migraine headaches can often take over a person’s life if not managed properly. These headaches can cause intense throbbing in one area of the head and is commonly accompanied by nausea, vomiting and extreme sensitivity to light and sound. They can last for hours or even days and can be so severe that all you want to do is go to bed. There are many causes that might trigger a migraine but the ones that I have experienced are: stress, food, trauma and even hormonal changes.
I have had “sick headaches” ever since I was an adolescent. I would often have them so bad that I would immediately go to bed when I came in from school. The smell of hot sweaty bodies on the school bus would often trigger my headaches. I went in and went straight to bed without ever eating supper. Over the years I have discovered that these migraines stem from post-traumatic stress that I suffered as a child.
The more that I have read on migraines, I realized that they are triggered from within. They often begin in childhood, adolescence or early adulthood. Migraines may progress through four stages: prodrome, aura, headache and postdrome. Prodrome are the days before a migraine (the onset), aura is the nervous system symptoms.
Depression after Menopause
Depression is an illness that I have dealt with all my life. As a young child, I remember the mood swings of my mother. One day her spirits were up and by afternoon she would be bed ridden or wanting to go to the hospital because she did not feel right. This has been a fear that I have faced all my life. ...My family is not against me going to school but they are against the fact that I chose a university so far from home. That night as I was crying, I felt like I could not call anyone for comfort because I would be admitting that Mid-Continent University was too far from home and admitting defeat. As I drove, cried and prayed, I started to question God’s plan for me that night and why everything in my life had to always be so hard. I assumed that God was testing my faith. I finally came to the conclusion that God was telling me to have faith in him and that if I could make it through that storm to the safety of my home; I could make it through school. “Cast all your anxiety on him because he cares for you” (1 Peter 5:7). I am slowly finding my place with all my additional demands and stability will eventually come, which will bring my level of stress down.
