This critical analysis will focus on my personal and professional experience that has driven my ambitions to become a social work practitioner in the field of mental health. While there are a variety of definitions for social work; (Chenoweth & McAuliffe, 2015, p. 16) state that it is a social workers obligation to challenge societal mechanisms that impede on welfare, human rights and social justice. I have chosen social work as my core values of compassion, patience, empowering relationships, fair and justness and challenging the status quo; align with the fundamental purpose of social work. Furthermore, situations are often complicated in the social work field. It is important to be fluid in your approach and engage in reflective practice often to further develop professional comprehension of self, others and appropriate application of theory. Fook (1996, pp. 4-5) Social work is a broad sector that at its core addresses complex interactions of people and their environments. Its moral mission is to bring people out of the margins and into the mainstream. I am fortunate to have found a profession that I connect so strongly to. My experiences with stigmatisation and mental health, teamed with continued study will broaden and solidify my understanding of the interrelatedness of theory, values and ethical dimensions of social work practice. As I progress through my degree and career, I understand that social work is a diverse field and my area of practice may change. Though, the underlying principles of social work are interwoven across each sector and the foundation of my practice is reinforced by my drive to be an agent of change, alleviate barriers that impede on social justice for individual, groups and
