Since healthcare personnel are frequently surrounded by disease and many other risks, personal protective equipment (PPE) may be needed. PPE is defined by OSHA as “equipment worn to minimize exposure to serious workplace injuries and illnesses. These injuries and illnesses may result from contact with chemical, radiological, physical, electrical, mechanical, or other workplace hazards” (U.S Department of Labor, 2015). Not all professions require the same PPE attire. There are PPE attire requirements that directly apply to healthcare. PPE attire in healthcare include gloves, masks, face shields, aprons, gowns, shoe covers, goggles, and head masks (Vyas, 2014). These equipment reduce the risk of an employee coming into contact with any blood borne pathogens or any other harmful materials that can affect their well-being. Whether I decide to work in a hospital or any other profession, OSHA will always be present. However, I believe that OSHA will never affect me negatively. There are safety risks with any career I decide to go into so it is important that I have the knowledge about what I can do to protect myself and others around me. OSHA serves a significant purpose in the workplace. Without it, healthcare facilities would face numerous amounts of problems.
