Friend or Foe “We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal; that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable rights; that among these, are life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness.” (The Declaration EAH, A-1). Everyone has heard this line before, we were taught in every grade of school that we are a great Nation, and we give equal rights to all. The United States history seems cut and dry, we were dominated by England, we fought, we won, and we became an independent nation. No one ever questioned our “great and powerful government”, but shouldn’t we question everything? thought the Native Americans were not smart enough to realize what was happening. They didn’t speak the same language and they could not read and write for the most part therefore they were taken advantage of and marginalized. The United States took it even further in the Indian Removal act of 1830, giving the President the authority to use military force to remove Natives from their land. (Lecture, Dec 1). The Indian Removal Act just shows how marginalized they were. Jackson describes the man, says whoever catches him will get a fifty dollar reward, and also states “ten dollars extra for every hundred lashes any person will give him to the amount of three hundred” (EAH, 254). When Jackson says that whoever finds him will get a reward we can see that this slave is valuable property to him and not a human. He takes it even further to say that for every lash he gets that is ten dollar extra. If a leader of America will say this, it just shows how badly they were exploited and it should change our perspective
