Reflection On Service Learning

This semester, I had the opportunity to complete my service learning hours in a Pre-K ESE classroom at E.W.F. Stirrup Elementary. I was in this class for about three months. During my time there, I met the teacher, paraprofessional, and the fifteen students. Four of the fifteen students are part of the special education program. Furthermore, I observed how the teacher and paraprofessional taught the students and managed the class. Unfortunately, I realized that most of the time the teacher was not necessarily teaching.
Dilemma

As previously mentioned, spending various hours in this Pre-K ESE class allowed me to see that the teacher is so busy trying to complete other things that she is not providing her students experiences that help strengthen social, emotional, and intellectual learning. Even though the students sometimes have small group time, the work they are given is not cognitively stimulating because the only thing they do is color or trace the worksheets. Creating these connections is imperative because they help children stay engaged and become effective learners. When a child is socially, emotionally, and cognitively engaged he/she can maximize a learning opportunity. NAEYC’s code of ethical conduct (2011) also states that teachers should “strive to build individual relationships with each child” (p. 3). The paperwork kept the teacher from teaching and from building strong relationships with her students.
