Education, my lifelong passion that is enriched through each of my teaching and learning experiences. As the first class of a pre-medicine focused middle college, I matured through understanding the rewarding nature of teaching as a writing fellow, tutor, and supplemental instructor. I became a more organized thinker, writer, and student, driving me to better myself as an educator. Developing analogies and providing examples led students to discover information themselves, while deepening my understanding of the course material as well. In addition to learning more, I became better at quickly mastering any subject. For example, I learned to
The high school junior and senior students ranged from believing they would never attend college to a student that went on to receive a perfect score on the ACT. Thrilled to develop a fun and engaging lesson plan, I surveyed student’s learning styles and tailored my lesson plans accordingly. I learned to adapt to my audience through revising my lesson plans throughout the summer. While most students engaged, the few students without interest in learning were detrimental to the students wanting to learn. Shifting my focus to encourage the students’ desire to learn, I shared the analogy of getting food at McDonald’s drive-thru to attending class. Who would order food at the menu, wait in line, pay, and then drive away without receiving the food? No one would drive away, yet students chose their courses, dedicate their time to attend class, and leave without learning anything. This analogy resonated with the students, which helped increase class participation. I learned to adapt my teaching and communication skills to overcome the challenge of having this broad range of students.
