Reflection Of My Experience At The Rochester Police Department

My internship was completed at the Rochester Police Department located at 400 Sixth Street Rochester, Michigan. For the first half of completed hours, I was placed on day shifts which are from the hours of 0800 to 1600. Day shift consisted of mainly office work with a few calls here and there. For the second half of completed hours, I was placed on night shifts which are from the hours of 2000 to 0400. Night shift consisted of ride alongs and handling citizen complaints about other citizens. These calls covered everything from alarms going off to sobriety tests to traffic stops. The overall experience of my internship was that of enjoyment and education. I learned a large amount information from this internship along with a new found respect for what exactly police officers have to do on a daily basis. I enjoyed the night shift compared to the day shift. This is because I feel like the night shift was more proactive than reactive. By stating that the night shift was more proactive, I am saying that at night I was looking for things along with responding to calls. Along with looking for things, I was responding to medical emergencies from all different sorts of issues. An example would be that of a boy who was only eighteen years old was. I always saw police officers as people who went from call to call without any down time to eat or unwind between calls. While out on the roads, officers responded to calls without having to rush from another call since it was such a small city. The officers would then be able to patrol the city for some time and another call would then come in. I also thought that officers were all serious business but they are just like everyone else and enjoy having a good time with fellow officers and interacting with the community to easily pass the down time that the officers do
