Noted author Kristin Hannah wrote this statement about mothers in one of her books, “As mothers and daughters, we are connected with one another. My mother is the bones of my spine, keeping me straight and true. She is my blood, making sure it runs rich and strong. She is the beating of my heart. I cannot now imagine a life without her.” This quote identifies my mother and the connection that we had with one another. As I look back over my life, I realize that my mother taught me many lessons including the importance of kindness, independence, and what really matters in life. First of all, the kindness my mother had was so powerful that everyone she came in contact with could see what a wonderful women she was. I remember the time when my uncle, his wife, and children moved to Newport News after he retired from the military, and he didn’t have a place to live right away, so my mother took them into our household. My sisters and I were very upset about this situation because that meant we had to share our rooms. My mother was a strong woman because she raised four girls mostly on her own. My father was hardly around, and I would only see him on the weekends My mother also worked extremely hard to support my three sisters and I. She would have to make sure everyone was ready for school in the morning, then she would catch the bus to work. My mother worked long hours, then come home and take care of us, cooked dinner, and cleaned the house, and she occasionally babysit other children.
