Ancient sport and modern sport is characterised by very similar and very differing qualities. The purpose of sport in both current era and in the era of the ancient Greeks and Romans is similar too. Along with similar characteristics and purpose, it is still very much a spectacle of society and a large source of entertainment for many people, as it was back in the glory days of the Greeks and the Roman empire. However the brutality and regulations and guidelines around sport have changed, along with the popularity of team sports now compared to that of the largely more popular individual pursuits of ancient sports.

Just like in Greek or Roman empire, Sport is encouraged a lot in order to maintain a healthy lifestyle and keep fit, healthy and free of diseases that are induced by poor physical health. However, the sports that are popular now are very different to those that people would take part in and spectate back in the era of the ancient Greeks and Romans. Common “sports” such as gladiatorial pursuits were very brutal, chaotic and popular and differ very much from recreational sports now such as walking, running and yoga. Gladiatorial games were a way to simulate warfare and military training which was a very important to the Romans and Greeks. Along with wrestling, discuss, shot-put and javelin, these are all events that would emulate warfare situations. As opposed to now where sports such as walking and running a merely to keep ones body in good health, ancient sports were often used and thought of as a form of training for war. Although we still have brutal contact sports today such as boxing, rugby and gridiron, these are not nearly as savage as the ancient sporting events that would often times would end in serious bloody injuries or even death. Along with the major difference in the degree of brutality, team sports are a lot more popular today than in the era of the ancient greeks and romans.
