Mobile Technology Changing Communication With about 7.1 billion people on the planet, there is roughly 6.8 billion mobile phones. Technology is knowledge that people use to make a way of life in their surroundings. The more complex a society’s technology, the easier it is for members of that society to shape the world for themselves. However mobile technology has a flaw of reducing face-to-face interactions. Study show that cell phones may be changing how people interact with each other and changing their expectations for social interaction. First, the calls typically occur at unpredictable times, so that they cannot be anticipated and integrated into the local discourse. Even after interactions are resumed, it is hard to continue where the interaction was left off. Secondly, deeply anchored norms and habits usually demand that calls are answered at the moment they come in, so that local interactions are disrupted even at highly critical moments. Third, when an individual is answering a call, he or she gets involved in a bilateral communication which is completely segregated from the local interaction. Most phone calls are private, in which case people would move away from other people so the phone conversation cannot be overheard. Some even use phone calls to get away from certain interactions they don’t want to be in. Not only do phone calls have a highly negative influence on face-to-face interaction, they sometimes replace face-to face interactions all together. Having a phone communication with someone would cancel the reason to talk to them if they are seen in public. The need to tell them something is not there anymore since it has already been talked about. This mostly concerns close people or relatives who see each other daily but don’t talk much. It can also be argued that social networks have affected our communication by the way we converse and in our writing techniques. The social web has changed the written word in a couple of crucial ways. People who communicate via social media or text message aren’t necessarily spelling things incorrectly, they are using new symbols in the world of instant messaging. “TTYL” is commonly used to let someone know you will talk to them later. In today’s world, abbreviations are now so common that we do not even have to think twice about what they stand for. For example, “FB is the best way 2 use sm. U have lots of chances 2 advertise ur biz.” Even though abbreviations, symbols and acronyms have made texting and sending “tweets” a lot easier and faster, they reduced the talent of people to write and verbally communicate in a much formal
