Memory Accuracy: Long-term and Short-term Memory

Memory can be defined as the collection of information over time (Lillienfled, 2012, p. 301). Our experiences will be stored in the brain in terms of long-term memory or short-term memory (Conners, 2011). However, average person has no ability to recall all events clearly because memory will less accurate over time (Lillienfled, 2012, p. 301). Even though the accuracy will reduce over time, the pain memory still will be clear as it play with their emotions (Science Daily, 2014). (Zonneveld, L. N., McGrath, P. J., Reid, G. J., and Sorbi, M. J., 1997) focused the research on the accuracy of children’s pain memories. 55 children (26 boys and 29 girls with a mean age of 11 years) from Izaak Walton Killam Children’s Hospital, a tertiary care children’s hospital, were participate in this research. The participants must fulfill the criteria needed; aged between 5 to16 years, stay at the hospital at least 2 days after meeting, English speaking, the consent of parents and doctors, and child’s willingness to participate . The experiment were conducted focusing on two factors; diary type and time of recall. For diary type experiment, it was was focused in term of recording of pain intensity and recording of visitors to evaluate the recalled pain intensity level, whereas for the time of recall, had two levels (recall on day 1 and day 7 and recall on day 7 only), allowed the accuracy of the memories to be determined.
In the other hand, (Rocha, E. M., Marche, T. A., & Von Baeyer, C. L., 2009) focused the research about how temperament and anxiety influences children’s memory for procedural pain. 36 children aged 5 to 12 were undergoing dental procedures and also assessed with three dimensions of temperament and trait anxiety beforehand. ...week, the accuracy of children’s recalled pain intensities ws still high. This shows that there is no difference in recalling pain intensities because in remembering the memory, the children will remember the feeling of the moment too. Thus, this study really prove that the details of past experience is accurate and reliable. In fact, the adolescent have more accurate in remembering the memory (Zonneveld, L. N., McGrath, P. J., Reid, G. J., and Sorbi, M. J., 1997).
