Today, in the United States, nearly four out of every five women are unhappy with their look, and nearly half of every television commercial aimed at a female audience mention the importance of a physical appeal. The younger generation of our country is one that is driven by fame and popularity more so than that of what’s most important. Although media has helped connect the world with exposure, it negatively impacts the behavior and standards by which the youth lives by and has even negatively affected the health of our younger generation. The improvements of technology and development of many social media networks over the last decade help add to these issues. Media infiltrates everything, everywhere in the United States, so much that …show more content…
It keeps us up to date with global issues and the well-being of other areas throughout all seven continents, and it enhances societies general knowledge by providing us with political, economic and social issues that take place all over the world. Even with social media, life was made a little bit easier. Social networks allow us to communicate and keep up with the lives of our distant relatives and friends that we may not see very often. It allows us to voice our opinion on certain issues that we feel should be on display for the general population to see. The media reaches a point however, where it becomes a serious issue, especially among our younger generation. Instead of society using the media’s power to do good, society’s use of it is quickly escalating whether or not they are aware of the harm its really causing. Social Media plays one of the biggest roles in the influence of the media on the younger generation. According to a report released by the American Academy of Pediatrics, more than half of adolescents use social media every day and one quarter of them use social media at …show more content…
Social media is something that is so powerful, and definitely has its pros and cons. For example, my father is grateful of the media in his life to give him the tools for his business. He said “without social media, I wouldn’t have a job”. He relies significantly on Instagram, Facebook, and his website along with other contracting websites to show off his work, and his social media platforms are where most his clients find him. To him it’s just something he uses for business. I believe all social media platforms can be played as a tool to be successful, for example LinkedIn. But I also think when used in the wrong ways I think it can be one of the most threatening and harmful aspects of one’s life. Most people in society today don’t use social media like my father does. According to my sister, she said comments like “without it I don’t think any of my friends would have boyfriends” and “I really just don’t know what people would do with themselves without an Instagram”. She also stated that if it didn’t exist, there would be a lot less tears, which I found interesting. She went on to tell stories about friends getting harassed and cyber bullied via Instagram and Facebook which were heartbreaking. Not only did she admit that these social media outlets make herself conscious, but she admitted to finding herself crying because of the standards these apps have created within girls her age.
There are many issues this world faces such as pollution, car fatalities, not taking care off the world etc.. People try and show their concerns for these issues by starting organisations or having protests and just trying to get people to realise that what they are doing is wrong and that we cant continue to live like this.
Thesis: Social media has an affect negative affect on people, which lead them to develop body image issues, that leads to low self-esteem, eating disorders, or worse
Simon Mainwaring, social media specialist, is quoted to saying, “Social media demands a lot of us on top of our already demanding lives.” In this day in age, media has boomed more rapidly than it ever has. Images are constantly flashing on our screens; we are being fed information concerning media on a regular basis. Due to the media it is effecting teens physically, mentally, and emotionally. Media is damaging the teens in this day of age.
The media, including television programming, cartoons, film, the news, as well as literature and magazines, is a very powerful and pervasive medium for expression. It can reach a large number of people and convey ideas, cultural norms, stereotypic roles, power relationships, ethics, and values. Through these messages, the mass media may have a strong influence on individual behavior, views, and values, as well as in shaping national character and culture. Although there is a great potential for the media to have a positive and affirming effect on the public and society at large, there may be important negative consequences when the messages conveyed are harmful, destructive, or violent.
Have you ever thought that teenagers spend most of their time on social media. You may think to yourself “that can’t possibly be good for them.” Well, you are correct. I agree with the article “Is Too Much Social Media Use Bad For Teen Health”, by Talah Al-Khatib, because social media does many bad things to teenagers and their brains. They may not realize all the bad things that happen to them while they are on social media but that doesn’t mean they don’t exist.
According to O’Keeffe and Clarke-Pearson, doctors with the American Academy of Pediatrics, social media improves tweens and teens communication, social, and technical skills. Social media sites offer youth the chance to connect with their friends outside of school and share pictures and videos with anyone they want. “According to a recent poll, 22% of teenagers log on to their favorite social media site more than 10 times a day, and more than half of adolescents log on to a social media site more than once a day.2 Seventy-five percent of teenagers now own cell phones, and 25% use them for social media, 54% use them for texting, and 24% use them for instant messaging” (O’Keeffe, Clarke-Pearson). With all the time that young people spend online, this means that a large part of their development is occurring while they are logged on. This is a problem because everything that tweens and teens encounter online is not positive or safe.
“I didn't know what Facebook was, and now that I do know what it is, I have to say, it sounds like a huge waste of time –Betty White (“Betty White Quotes,” 2014, para. 1).” This quote can be interpreted to fit with several of the social media avenues that many people spend their time on. Day in and day out people post, tweet, share, and pin countless times throughout the world. These different forms of communication were first created for an easier way for people to connect with others. Yet now, so much time is spent on these social sites that it has warped the interactive part and is causing more damage than good. Many are growing a desire and are living for the amount of “likes” they can receive on a post or how many re-tweets they can generate. Instead of going to these outlets to participate in a partial portion of their social lives, people are filling that time with the technological aspect of communication. As White said, this can become an inordinate amount of wasted time and can ultimately grow into further damaging circumstances. These different social media channels can cause emotional harm through disparaging the relationship between friends, conjuring of a narcissistic personality, and the retrogradation of ones self-esteem.
Social media has helped to guide the young generation in their search for a purpose in life. It had been proven to support emotional harm that many of the young generation face. This shows us that social media does offer the young generation benefits that far outweigh the cons, therefore proving that social media alone is not the cause of the young generation’s
Social media is so popular that according to a recent article published by forbes.com, “72% of American adults are currently using social media sites; that figure has gone up 800% in just 8 years”(Olenski). Social networking was originally created to simply reconnect people with old high school pals, but in recent years it has evolved into a completely different operation. When social media first originated it was also intended for adult usage, which has in recent years expanded into the usage of all ages. Social media can create a negative affect on lives because it has been proven to be a dangerous addiction, for it takes away interpersonal relationships that are essential in life, and it has been proven to prevent people from being productive in life.
Social media has impacted everyone that has used it at some point in his or her life. Since the world is increasing in technology advances, so is social media, which can be good and bad. Technology has made a huge difference in the world and definitely how people are doing things now. Yes, the Internet can be good for the majority of things we use it for, such as doing research, keeping in touch with family or friends who are far away, and saving time and money. Others like to take advantage of social media and use it in a way that can hurt people; it may not hurt them physically, but it can hurt them emotionally.
Social Media is defined by Merriam-Webster as “forms of electronic communication (as Web sites for social networking and microblogging) through which users create online communities to share information, ideas, personal messages, and other content (as videos)” (Merriam-Webster), and for many Americans is a method of social interaction that is used often on a daily basis. It has been determined that one in five people use social media at least once a day and that 19% of Americans between the age of 15 and 54 are on sites like Facebook and Twitter(). It’s no longer common place to send handwritten letters or birthday cards, now writing on a wall, sending a tweet or snapping a picture is accepted. Although social media has provided todays society with instant forms of communication and ways to connect, it also created a new standard for living and has caused problems for many groups of citizens in all walks of life and has caused society to re-think its usage. There are two views about social media, either that. It is a positive addition to society and its benefits outweigh the risks, or that social media causes more harm than good and it’s usage should be limited.
Today technology has created new styles of communication on the internet for us all. This technology has made great impact on everyday life in today’s society. Cyber communications have become hugely popular in the last decade, especially those websites that help people to find new or old friends, keep in touch with families, and even help people to find potential dates! The numbers of people using cyber social networking are growing in millions every year. Cyber social networks have helped people link to each other with common interests, and expand personal ideas and support worldwide. But people are getting too friendly with this technology. Dangers are slowly appearing, and there still have a lot of hidden threats. Cyber social networks are threats to our personal social lives, lead into new addictions, and compromise the security of privacy issues.
Social media has nothing but negative effects on people’s minds. Social networking can become very addicting and people can get wrapped up in the drama and excitement of the cyber world. It would only improve our society today if social media never existed to our knowledge. Our society today feels so connected with social media that it interferes with our lives making every task even harder with the temptations.
The correlation between the development of youth and social media has become blatant. Although few of the consequences are favorable, the majority have displayed a negative impact. The drive social media can implement on youth is exceptional. The pressure and strain social media can place on our youth is an enduring force which leads individuals to question themselves as a person and feel inclined to fit a norm expressed in media and social media of our society. The underlying force social media can play in the lives of the youth is astonishing and is a force that must be dealt with and controlled, for it not only holds the power to give an individual strength, but also to break them down.
Furthermore, another negative effect of media that will influence teenagers is behavior (Armstrong, 2012). One of the behaviors that will affect by media is human interaction. Teenagers are spending too much time on media such as Facebook, Twitter, and others which are included under social media. It causes them lacking in socializing with people who are around them. Besides, media influence teenagers to be a lack of face-to-face communication with their families and friends. For example, a teenager has a problem with his or her computer in his or her room, his or her solving method is to call or text a message to one of his or her family members by cell phone rather than going out of the room and tells the problem of their own. Thus, this
