Parenting Classes: Beneficial or Wasteful?
Parenting is defined by two definitions. The first definition states that parenting is simply the rearing of children. But can “parenting” be put in such simple terms? Taking care of a child is an overwhelming task for parents both young and older. All of which face seemingly close challenges when it comes to raising kids. Parents should have basic knowledge of how to take care of their children from their early steps to them growing older. Parenting classes offer just that. These classes offer knowledge from taking care of children of varying ages to how to connect them with on an emotional level. All new parents should be required to take basic parenting classes; such classes will be beneficial to both the parents and their kids.
The basics of parenting classes can have a broad range. Each is essential to new parents and even second time parents. In “Parenting Classes: Pros and Cons”, the article discusses that classes may range from basic baby care, such as changing diapers, breastfeeding, bathing, to emergency care and first aid. Other parenting classes focus on older children and their parents in terms of what to expect with development and behavior at each age. Also parents could learn how to manage stress before and after pregnancy, about healthy discipline and handling behavioral problems, how to raise healthy and generally happy children, and how to balance the family with respect and responsibility (Parenting Classes-1). Most of this information is not known to new parents and even some second time ones. Parenting isn’t easy. It’s a fact of life. Society offers many different types of approaches to childbearing. Some specific ways include an authoritative style, a neglectful style, a permissive style, the list goes on and on. However, as a parent, it’s often hard to tell hard to which method is the most effective and beneficial to a child. Nowadays and more than ever, people are finding that some parents may perhaps be getting too involved. Parenting styles refer to a set of different manners in which parents raise their children. There are four parenting styles including authoritarian, authoritative, permissive, and uninvolved parenting. The authoritarian parenting style is based on the implementation of rules, and on the idea that all rules should be followed without exceptions. Similarly, authoritative parenting style implements rules, but the child feelings are taken in consideration and reasonable exceptions to the rule are allowed. Nowadays, parents only want what is best for their children and their parenting styles plays a crucial role in the development of children which will in the long run, not only effect the child’s childhood years, but later prolong into their adult life as well.
Growing up, two group of people, parents, and grandparents, took the time and the energy to raise me. Both of them had different approaches when raising me. These approaches were different parenting styles. According to Baumrind, parenting style was the “[capturing] normal variations in parents’ attempts to control and socialize their children” (Darling, 1999). To put it simply, parenting style goal was to lecture, influence, and discipline a child. In general, there are four parenting styles with their own specific benefits and disadvantages. Furthermore, parenting style, granted the dynamic of the family was understood, can be identified in families.

Successful parenting may be judged by many different standards. Raising a child to be a respectful, mature, and independent adult requires a great deal of effort. There are several parenting styles, and not all lead a child to reaching their full potential. Overpowering sternness leads may lead to a rebellious child, while passive parenting may lead children to inept for the challenges of adulthood. Parenting requires more than teaching children submissiveness, or building of self-importance. Children learn best from a role model who is admirable. Parenting is a great opportunity to set the course of one’s entire life in the right direction.
There are many approaches to parenting and everyone has their own preferences as to what they think is best. In a fast paced rush around society, it is hard to know what the best choices are for your children.
