Loving Love
Although I may be very young, I have been through a lot of heart ache. I have been abused, beaten, left, and even heart broken. I know this may seem like a lot, however, it’s just a part of my life. Every time I hear a certain songs that have to do with love I begin to think of how they apply to me. I like to listen to slow songs because they help me process everything that is going on around me. A lot of people would say this is bad to do, however, I think that this helps me relax and cope with all the things that I have been put through in the past. There are two songs that help me cope with everything that I have just fallen in love with. These two songs are “All of Me” by John Legend and “Gravity” by John Mayer. These two songs have inspired me to feel love again, trust again, and enjoy music again. Both of these songs can give off two different moods or two of the same moods.
Rhythm:
The first song I will talk about is “Gravity” by John Legend. This song has a very slow beat. I believe that the song is played in triple meter because there are three small beats and then one big beat. This adds emotion to the song and also sets the tone for the song as well. There seems to be some type of saxophone or other instrument in the background which I believe the artist is using as an accent. It does so by simultaneously playing in the background and adding more emotions. When the song hits 2:25 you can hear a dotted rhyme. There is along not played and then a short not and then another long note. This is actually a part that the song gets the most emotional and it seems to add a little tension to the song. ...es off as happy. The overall theme of both songs is the same, which is love. The first song is overall sad and the second song is overall happy. I really was not able to hear any syncopation in either song. I listened to them several times; however, I was not able to hear if there was syncopation in either song. Even though both songs are about love I think they have very different meanings. One song is created to make you think and sad, while the second song is created to make you happy. I would like to hear more in each song. I would like to hear more pitch and tone from both as well. I think if the artist keeps going back to the tonic note to much that the song can become boring. Both songs had a lot of rhythm, melody, and harmony within the piece which without this the songs wouldn’t be what they are. I love both these songs both musically and emotionally.
This does not make up for the lack of other poetic elements, and the simplicity of the writing. The differences between the two pieces is still very vass. The two pieces have two totally different objectives, which makes them have different writing styles. In this paper I will evaluate two songs that deal with depression and discuss their similarities and differences. The songs under evaluation are the early nineties hit Jeremy by Pearl Jam and the recent hit Adams Song by Blink 182.
The first song played was from a genre that I had previously taken a test on, Sonata. The musicians played the song by the book. There were three movements and polyphonic texture. It was even fast and jerky. Nonetheless, this is the part where my rollercoaster was going down. In my opinion it was boring. Although very well played, the song itself did not interest me. I did not like the roadrunner, coyote essence of the song. The piano accompaniment would sometimes play the melody and let the clarinet follow and then they would switch. This to me seemed force instead of like the Sonatas that I listened to in class. However, apart from the musical aspect of the first piece there was a certain intensity expressed by the performers. Throughout my life, music has always been a major influence. It has the power to change my mood when I'm feeling down, but the thing I find most intriguing about music is that it doesn't always end up improving your mood: like all forms of art, it imitates life, which is not always portrayed in a positive light. The musicians that I admire most have the versatility to induce several different emotional responses in the same piece. This quality is present in most of the wide variety of music I listen to, from Russian composer Dmiti Shostakovich, to Chicago jazz band Tortoise, to California pop/rock sextet Mr. Bungle.
The life of an adolescent varies from day to day. For every good thing, most likely there is a bad thing. This doesn’t always happen, but this constant changing of moods can greatly affect the stress one feels. Adolescents will look for some form of relief, this often being music. Turning on the radio while doing homework can help people stay relaxed and get through an assignment. Drifting off for thirty minutes while you listen to your favorite band on a pair of headphones can be the cure also. It is not what an individual turns on that matters, as long as it is what they like. Not everyone is going to listen to Top 40 music, but a majority will so we focus on the top five songs. The top five songs of today do not differ that much thematically from when I was fourteen with the most common theme being love.
In Songs of Innocence and Experience (1789 and 1794), William Blake arouses readers' minds and leads them into a path of finding their own answers and conclusions to his poems. He sets up his poems in the first book, Songs of Innocence, with a few questions as if they were asked from a child's perspective since children are considered the closest representation of innocence in life. However, in the second book, Songs of Experience, Blake's continues to write his poems about thought-provoking concepts except the concepts happen to be a little bit more complex and relevant to experience and time than Songs of Innocence.

Driving home after a long, difficult day, I turned on some music, searching for relief. The CD in the player consisted of all my favorite songs: “Pee Wee Long Way( Chasing)’,” “Lil Boosie (Long Journey),”Lil snupe “(Nobody),” and many others. My number one favorite song, “(Chasing),” was the first to play. Singing along to the lyrics, my mood was immediately better. This song reminded me of what was important in my life, my dreams and money. I then realized what these songs had in common; they all reflected my feelings on life: don’t give up on your dreams and don’t worry about every little thing life throws at you, keep chasing your dream until you reach the top.
In the beginning when he starts off with a slow melody, I am reminded of a scene in the movie “Uptown Girls”. During that scene the two ladies are riding a merry-go-round and they are moving fast but the camera has them going in slow motion and I just imagine this music as they are going around and around laughing, smiling and having a great time. At about four minutes in the song the mood is changed and seems almost triumphant, and when listening to that I imagine a king entering a room or building and the trumpets sounding and everyone is turned to watch the king. At five minutes and twenty seconds in the song it is almost a soft and playful tune then gets intense and I think of the movie “Bambi” when all the deer are running through the field and Bambi’s mother is killed by a hunter. Later in the peace the mood is brightened and I imagine in the same movie where Bambi finds all of the other animals and makes friends with them. I really enjoyed this piece because I was able to come up with many different scenes and images in my head and was able to connect my experience with the composition with a movie. I would definitely recommend this piece to another listener especially if they enjoy using their imagination to come up with scenarios based on their own personal
When ever I was having a rough day or week I would play this song and soon enough it became a routine for me. Routines were nice especially at this time in my life and I would normally play this lovely song by Louis Armstrong on Mondays to start my week of right. As cheesy as it sounds verses like “I see them bloom, for me and you” and “I see friends shaking hands. saying how do you do? They’re really saying, I love you” can make you feel so much better and they show that Louis wasn’t just “thinking to himself”’ he wanted more then just himself to enjoy this wonderful world around us and not think so negatively. This song does so much more to me then a catchy beat to sing along to in the car or in the shower. To me it means that no matter how good or bad your life is right now, wake up each morning and be thankful that you still have one. That you have the ability to enjoy and observe those “Skies of blue” , “trees of green” and “the colors of the rainbow”. Yes, this song resonates with me on a different level then it may with others but Louis Armstrong did such a amazing job of making the meaning so sweet and straight to the point that really anyone can
Has a song ever flowed into the moment so perfectly that you can feel the artist soul take you over? It would be safe to say that this has happened to everyone. Humans as artistic creatures have the need to not only express their feelings in words but also create an atmosphere of emotion with music so that their very soul is out in the open for the world to hear. Fear, anger, heartbreak, rebellion, and love are all things we express creatively through music. These emotions are expressed differently through out the many types of music that the world has to offer and all have very distinct sounds.
Songs of heartbreak are popular for a reason. Everyone needs a song to blast and wail to after a bad breakup. Rapper Eminem had a very publicized and tumultuous relationship with his ex-wife Kim. In his song “Bad Husband”, he raps, “When we tied the knot, when we broke the knot. Every line we crossed we were supposed to not. Every time we fought, the insults, they got… thrown too far” (Grant, Harris, Mathers, and Resto, “Bad Husband”). These lyrics aren’t relatable to everyone, and for some people, they are relatable when they shouldn’t be. Still, people can connect to and understand the regrets that Eminem feels when thinking of his past relationship, just like they can understand ever present teen angst. Teen angst, while stereotypical, is experienced by most people. This explains the massive success of one of the most iconic songs of the 90s, “Smells Like Teen Spirit”. Nirvana frontman Kurt Cobain dissonantly sings, “It's fun to lose and to pretend, she’s over bored and self assured” and yells out, "With the lights out, it's less dangerous, here we are now, entertain us. I feel stupid and contagious” (Cobain, Grohl, Novoselic). Even when reading the lyrics, many can hear Cobain’s distinct voice. These words left such an impact on people because they summed up rebellion and angst perfectly. Amusing, sometimes confusing lyrics can also have benefits. Take the song
Both poems oscillate in tone and pace , from meditative to rage to mournful and regretful. However the techniques used in each piece are both indicative of and unique to their creator. Like trees have similar characteristics but differ greatly in form and And while one may have a favourite tree or a favourite poem it is the specie as a whole that one takes delight in and appreciates how it is the differences that make each individual poem or tree unique and special, and the species as a whole more interesting and varied.
