He was very successful as the CEO of a huge events organizing company and living a luxurious life that he always wished for throughout college. He had everything that defines a good life. He had been a very hardworking student with an admirable character and many of his peers saw him as their role model. His parents were very proud of him and many of his peers were impressed with his hard work and success. This story is about the life of Dave, who after pursuing a degree in Entrepreneurship became a successful entrepreneur as the owner of an international events organizing company. The story also narrates how the business empire he had labored for so long to create, came down crashing, fifteen years later.
When Dave was young, he had a passion for business and right after graduation, he was ready to do what he had always dreamt. With a loan from his parents, he launched his business as an event’s organizer. As a twelve-year-old growing up in Georgia, Dave and a few of his friends organized events and competitions for children in the neighborhood. Since his first business had been a big success, Dave decided that events organization was the way to go, only that this time he was doing it as his career. Since he was now mature and sure of what he wanted to achieve, for him the sky was the limit. He launched Evento as his company trademark and the name under which he was to operate.
With the limited funds he had, Dave rented an apartment in the suburbs of Los Angeles, and his home doubled up as office. Upon clearance with customs, the security officers alongside media personnel stormed the venue demanding that the barrels be opened. Amidst protests from its owners, the container was opened and to the awe of everyone, it contained tons of hard drug substances such as cocaine and marijuana. With enough evidence to prosecute them, Bob and Dave were arrested, arraigned in court and sentenced into life imprisonment. His sons were in court and sadly watched as their dad was whisked away from court, his wife sobbed silently. Fifteen years of hard work had been wasted, Evento collapsed because of the negative public image of its owner.

The definition of success varies around the world, but according to Malcolm Gladwell its achievement can be broken down into a few components. Although Gladwell never truly establishes credibility in his book Outliers, he still backs up his proposed theories with reputable studies and sources which intrigue the audience to keep reading.The purpose of Outliers was to enlighten people about the different elements of success while also informing them of real life situations where seemingly less than likely people beat the odds and became the powerful figures that they are today. The intended audience is anyone who is looking to become successful or who is perhaps interested in the idea of success itself and wishes to learn more about it. Understandably, a secondary audience could be high school students who are about to venture out into the world on their own because with this book they will hopefully start paying attention to different factors of their lives and seizing opportunities that they may have otherwise passed up. Malcolm Gladwell talks about the 10,000 Hour Rule and also how I.Q. does not amount to much without creativity. He also speaks of how chance opportunity comes into play and that the distant background of a person still reflects how they handle situations in their present day life. Gladwell’s Outliers successfully informs the reader about the different components that add up to success with probable theories and credible studies to make for an interesting and motivational read.
Moreover, this concept of free will and becoming financially self-reliant is still prevalent in modern society. The mid-twentieth (20th) to the early twenty-first (21st) century has become the age of entrepreneurship, where peoples from all nations no longer desire to work “for the man” but create their own legacy of prosperity. Likewise, it is a period in time that has redefined the way in which those from all walks of life can obtain success and wealth. Hence, the evolution of reality TV stars, YouTube sensations and rappers from being ordinary individuals to becoming fashion designers, actors and CEOs. However, our definition of success is not only defined by wealth it also includes having a life of meaning that is similar to that of Dr. Martin Luther king Jr. and Malcolm X. Certainly, I am speaking of a life that encompasses the ability to change our world for the better.

The story of these men’s lives is inspiring for a new entrepreneur or innovator to use as an example for effectiveness in business. These two CEO’s would make a good team if they joined forces. Each company has to find their own niche and the business model that works for them. The key to both of these CEO’s success was listening to the customer. Krames also mentioned that it is important to remember the none customer as well. It took strong dedication and devotion of these two men to keep their focus on their company’s mission and vision. Both Chapters illustrated the healthy fear a company faces and satisfy the market (Krames, 2003).
