Leonardo Da Vinci was born April 15, 1452 in Anchiano. This was located near Vinci. (Levy, 40) Leonardo Da Vinci’s scientific studies got him the place of the first true modern scientist. If he Da Vinci hadn’t been a really good artist people wouldn’t have noticed his talent at all. Leonardo Da Vinci didn’t follow what other scientists had back in his time. He made detailed observations of the world as he saw it. (Phillips, 118) Leonardo based only a little bit of his work on classical discoveries. Leonardo made his own views and methods on how to find out things. He was usually always right. Back then things were not as simple as they are now. When Leonardo Da Vinci asked a simple question he would most likely spend weeks, sometimes even months, just to figure out an experiment. (Phillips, 119) During Leonardo Da Vinci’s observations on the birds it would include: watching birds as they are flying, sketching the birds in a lot of different poses, observing them close up, and dissecting (taking them apart) them to understand how they can fly. Leonardo Da Vinci, after all looking over and examining information, would put into basic understanding for the people what happens. After this he made a flying machine for humans. (Phillips, 119) Leonardo was one of the first scientists to study robotics. In 1495 Leonardo Da Vinci sketched an idea for a mechanical robot. The robot looked almost close to a human to some people and Da Vinci. Leonardo Da Vinci had no idea what he had made for it. Leonardo da Vinci was a famous painter, sculptor, and inventor that lived from 1452-1519. He was born in a small Italian town of Vinci and lived on a small estate that his father owned. Leonardo kept the name of the town that he was born in for his last name. Since his mother did not marry his father, he could not inherit his father’s land, nor did he have much going for him as a wealthy businessman. When people think of Leonardo da Vinci, they mostly associate him with art and paintings, such as his famous Mona Lisa and The Last Supper. Leonardo believed that art was correlated to science and nature. Da Vinci was largely self-educated and he filled endless notebooks with examinations and suppositions about pursuits from aeronautics to anatomy.
Da Vinci was one of the first artists to incorporate mathematics into his works of art. In the book titled Leonardo on Painting by Martin Kemp, it states that Da Vinci used angle measures to further increase the realism of his works of art. One example given by the book is about the angle of light, when light hits a shape or face at a certain angle it creates a specific shadow, that shadow allows the object to appear more three-dimensional. Another example of how Di Vinci displays his knowledge in mathematics through his art can be found in the painting the last supper, in this painting he drew the celling as more of a trapezoidal shape to make the back wall appear further away from the table rather than having the table appear to be placed directly in front of the back wall. According to Leonardo on Painting, Historians are in constant debate on whether or not his shift in art styles had any correlation with the time period he lived in, which as we all know is considered the renaissance period. Leonardo Da Vinci was an artist as well as a scientist. He devoted his time to gaining knowledge through his studies of the natural world. For Leonardo, understanding the world meant experimenting and observing in a cause-and-effect manner. He believed that nature followed a set of laws and they could be uncovered by intensive studies. This eagerness to understand the natural world through examination set him aside from his contemporaries. Through these observations he created a vast number of scientific manuscripts that helped him understand the natural world he celebrated in his paintings.
One of his creations was the flying machine. He loved the idea of people soaring like birds and wanted to make that dream a reality. The designs of the flying machine is clearly inspired by the wings of animals that could fly. Leonardo da Vinci’s flying machine has a wingspan of over 33 feet. The frame of the machine was made out of pine that was covered in silk. A sleek and light design that also proved to be sturdy. The way the machine worked is the pilot would lie face down on the board and he would have pedal a crank that was connected to a rod-and-pulley system. There was also a hand crank that was available. This was used for additional energy and the steering was done with a head piece. The pilot was to work the crank with both his hands and feet at the same time. Doing so would cause the wings to flap. A unique feature was the wings were designed to twist when they flapped. This design was an inspiration from nature. Besides his flying machine, he also conceived the idea for a parachute. Although credit for the first parachute doesn't formally go to Leonardo da Vinci he did create the design for it a couple hundred years before it was actually invented. While many modern “renaissance individuals” go quietly about their lives being exceptional yet unnoticed, the first renaissance man, Leonardo Da Vinci, made quite a stir and caught the attention and imagination of the fifteenth century world. In his own time, Da Vinci was a renowned artist, scientist and inventor who was celebrated by thinkers, artists and kings alike. He was always being watched. He was left handed and he wrote his notes backwards because it was to encode them or it was more comfortable we will never know (lassieur 62). There have been numbers and letters found in The Mona Lisa’s eyes. Leonardo’s inventions were unusual. In his notes there was found a version of a bike that resembles the bikes of today (lassieur 83). His drawing of a tank is considered garbage because the gears are drawn so the tank wouldn’t move. Most say he did this on purpose because he knew the destruction that the tank would bring. He also drew multiple mechanisms for flight and ways to breath under water.. Leonardo Da Vici was a great thinker and he was way ahead of his time in what he did and if it wasn't for some of the things he did then we as a civilization wouldn't have some of the things we have now. His works has greatly influenced the world today and has changed the way people do things.
Leonardo da Vinci’s inventions were all considered fever dreams in the Renaissance era, like the equivalent of seeing a futuristic object in a science-fiction movie, but they inspired many actual products of the world of today. Some of the ideas his imagination scribbled in a notebook are the parachute, diving suit, armored cars (like army tanks), and an Ornithopter, a machine made for flight with the use of wings (Lampton Christopher).

Leonardo da Vinci was one of the greatest mathematicians to ever live, which is displayed in all of his inventions. His main pursuit through mathematics was to better the understanding and exploration of the world. He preferred drawing geographical shapes to calculate equations and create his inventions, which enlisted his very profound artistic ability to articulate his blueprints.
