Kindergarten general education classroom with 17 students, 2 are English Language Learners and 3 have Individualized Education Plans. The students sit at tables with groups of 4 for independent work and sit on a large alphabet rug for class discussions at the SmartBoard or by the easel. There is a lot of positive reinforcement throughout the class and day. If they do something the teacher will say, “You’re a rock star!” or “You did an awesome job!”. I observed one time that a student was not listening, walking around the room, and bothering his neighbors. While he was doing this the rest of the students weren’t focused on the teacher’s lesson, but him. Another time I could tell the teacher was having a bad day and didn’t feel well, so she was a bit short with the students and not her usually pleasant demeanor. The students could sense it and didn’t what to work and some became cranky themselves. I observed the teacher behavior plays a large role in how the students acted and received information. If there aren’t any classroom procedures in place the classroom and its environment don’t run smoothly. If the students know what is expected from them and what they can except from the teacher the classroom and its environment have a positive aspect to it. I noticed in the classrooms that I observed in if there were set procedures in place, such as you turn in your homework at the beginning of class or even as simple as this is the way we line up, the classroom environment was better. Some of the personal stories that Mooney recounted made me very sad, and it was hard to believe that there were and continue to be some teachers that are just so ignorant, impatient, and unaware of what is going on with their student(s). Some great teaching strategies that can be implemented in the classroom to help students be more successful are developing a reward system for good behavior, organizing breaks between major tasks, and using auditory and visual signals. Reward systems is an excellent strategy to implement in the classroom to help students remain on task, participate in class, and behave appropriately. Johnson is a state certified teacher who has worked in the public school system for over fifteen years. Good Grades Activity Center provides support for students in all subjects and prepares children in grades three to five for state standardized testing. There are two additional assistant teachers in the classroom including myself. In addition to the general education teacher, another individual and I provide assistance on different days, but work collaboratively when needed. Our duties consist of distributing snacks/games at the start of the session, assisting the teacher with lesson plans and helping students with homework. Student teaching has taught me to appreciate the wisdom of mentors and experienced teachers. There were several times when my field based supervisors pointed my in the right direction when faced with challenges. I recall a student that I suspected to have copied his homework from other students. I stressed that we figure out how he did it but I could not some up with any definite facts to prove he had did so. Ms. Darling insisted that I not worry about it and if he did cheat then it would be revealed on his exam. Surely enough, the student failed his exam miserably. During a teacher/parent conference, I asked him how he managed to receive an A on all of his homework and fail his exam so poorly. To my astonishment the student confessed to having copied his homework from other students. His mother immediately addressed both issues with her child and needless to say I did not have the problems form the student anymore. During my computer Information technology Course, discipline problems plagued me during the first two weeks of student teaching. Mr. Washington, another field based supervisor told me to began calling parents immediately after class. He told me to call everyday if I had to. Surely after a few phone calls to parents, behaviors adjusted quickly. By the end of my student teaching time period, in my opinion I had a model classroom as far as classroom behavior goes.

The job of a teacher is never easy but we have seen how cooperative discipline and enabling students to feel capable, connected and contributing can improve classroom management and maybe even our own moods. If we create an environment of mutual respect and give our students legitimate power of voice and choice in the classroom we will see positive results in improved student behavior and student achievement. To write a reflection paper about the whole TESOL project for the past one and a half years is not a difficult thing for me because I never regret my choice to study in Alliant International University and learning master’s TESOL program here. With completing the master’s TESOL program, I was be able to benefit a variety of new things from different courses, as well as refresh my memory on thing that I already knew.
My classroom management plan is very simple, yet I have found it to be extremely effective. This strategy has worked in every classroom that I have taught in. My approach is always student-centered as I will help students to develop a sense of responsibility for the actions they choose. The behavior standards in my classroom are high yet developmentally appropriate for the grade that I am teaching. My students will play an equitable role in creating rules for our classroom environment. Together, we will evaluate what appropriate behavior for our classroom is. I will write these rules as positive statements to be displayed in the room and ensure that all students understand the expectations in our class. Students will be made the consequences for failing to abide by the rules that we have collectively made. It is my continuous goal to be firm, kind, and consistent in my approach to rules and consequences. This will help foster a composed, secure, and systematic classroom - one in which facilitates learning.
As stated earlier, I believe Classroom Management is the key to how learning can take place and students can feel safe participating. This being my first year of teaching I feel there are so many things that I have learned, and have helped me too become a good teacher. Yet I have so much more to learn, I still believe that students have the ability to learn and as a teacher it is my job to find ways to help them to become the best person they can be. Through being a reflective teacher, using professionalism, respecting diversity and having collaboration and community connecting this can be accomplished. When I am having fun teaching the student will have learning that material, this will help them to be relaxed and engaged in that lesson. I feel it is important to connect what they are learning to things that they have experienced in the real-world.
The class I visited is comprised of 24 five and six year old children, a lead teacher and a ‘Para-Pro” who assists the teacher and provides support and guidance for the children. Within the classroom itself, there are 6 tables organized in the center of the room in a grid formation. Children have their own workspace at a shared table. Around the perimeter of the room are ‘centers’ where each day, the children work on tasks such as listening, story development, gross and fine motor skills, math, reading and other important skills that are needed to develop socially and academically. In several places on the walls, there are displays or ‘brag boards’ where children can post their work that they feel best represents their efforts. The walls are brightly decorated and are filled with pictures, letters, numbers and other basic elementary school information. It is energizing and interesting without being chaotic or overstimulating.
In the past few years it seems that schools have really lost touch with the discipline of students. With the increasing frequency of school shootings and acts of violence it seems that the students are running the show instead of the teachers and administrators. There are many factors that are involved in creating a great classroom or a horrible classroom. One topic I enjoyed in this class was social interaction and social structure. Social interaction is how we interact with others in the world. Social structure is our status in the world. The one thing that stood out to me was the three different statuses. Ascribed status is a part of us, something that will never go away. My ascribed status is that I am an African American woman. Achieved status is the things we accomplish in life and put effort into. These are the things we freely do. My achieved status would be when I was in High School and I volunteered to mentor small kids at an elementary school. Students need feedback, clear expectations, and a schedule to follow throughout the day so that teachers spend less time directing behavior and more time is spent actively engaged in learning. There should be more time consumed on strengthening positive behavior and fewer on the negative.
