Reflection Of Multicultural Education

Before the semester started I believed that I was a well educated when it came to diversity in and out of the classroom. Since the classroom reading and discussions became more in depth I have realized I have a lot to learn in order to meet the needs of all my students. No matter what kind of school system I am working in students should be able to receive a full education. Students need to know about issues that are occurring right now in our country and the rest of the world but also the correct interpretation of history and not what people feel comfortable teaching. Multicultural education is any kind of education that incorporates different perspectives that is not the usual norm. This concept is very important and need to be taught in the schools, but in the right way. We have discussed in class how handing out a MLK picture to color or a Rosa Park’s crossword puzzle will not help enhance the student’s knowledge. Yes, fun activities like this are okay, but only after an educational lesson is taught. It is essential that students understand and know that these historic issues are important. It could be because many of these lessons are not covered in the curriculum, they themselves were never educated in these areas so they do not know what to teach, or the school system put down these methods. The system needs reforming in order for education to be culturally relevant. The article by Gloria Ladson-Bills explains how more academic success will be achieved when multicultural concepts are brought into the classroom. These lessons will benefit all students no matter what their race may be. I believe both the past and the present needs to be introduced to students.
