There is no good and proper time to fall in love. In fact, most love stories derive from the most unlikely of circumstances. When two successful, career-driven individuals set out to advance their career at the unsuspecting expense of each other, the idea of falling in love couldn’t have been further from their minds. In the Paramount Studios 2003 film, “How To Lose A Guy In 10 Days”, what began as a selfish work project for a young successful man and woman, ultimately ended in the pair falling in love. Both parties are challenged to manipulate one another for their own personal gain. Throughout the film we see the interpersonal communication between the pair as they set out to achieve their goals over the course of a 10 day period. They are torn between victorious outcome of their challenge and keeping their selfish focus of their career advancement, and how they truly begin to feel about one another. Andi Anderson (Kate Hudson) is a beautiful, young, and successful writer who maintains a “How-To” section in “Composure” magazine. Her dream is to “write about things that matter, like politics and the environment, and foreign affairs- things I’m interested in.” (How To Lose A Guy In 10 Days, time stamp 02:00). She knows that the only way she will eventually be able to write about subjects she’s passionate about is to be successful in writing her superficial “How-To” section in the magazine. After watching a girlfriend’s string of unsuccessful relationships, she agrees to write an article entitled “How To Lose A Guy In Ten Days’. At the encouragement of her strong-willed boss, she sets out to date a guy, do all of the things wrong that woman do to chase men away, and dump him after 10 days. Although they both initially were upset at what the other did to them, they took ownership in the role they had played and eventually both individuals were able to win in the end. In this day and age, writing is being portrayed through various mediums, such as film and television. Some of those portrayals depict writing as both good and bad depending on the situation that is present. Authors such as, by E. Shelley Reid, Kevin Roozen, and Anne Lamott all write about important writing concepts that are being depicted in films, like Freedom Writers. The film Freedom Writers shows a positive and accurate portrayal of writing in the sense that the writers should have a connection to what they are writing about, writing is a form of communication, and that writing does not have to be perfect the first time.
In an interview with the Paris Review, Amy Hempel compares writing short fiction with journalism, stating that, “you have to grab readers instantly and keep them.” She refers to “In the Cemetery Where Al Jolson is Buried,” remarking “The opener contains the whole story: ‘Tell me things I won’t mind forgetting’” (Hempel, 39).

This film also shows that people of different backgrounds can too be in love. This movie illustrates that even though there are differences between two people, doesn’t mean they cannot be together. In the world today, people of all different types are falling in love. This used to be unheard of, but is now becoming a way of life. I feel that this movie did a wonderful job of showing many aspects of love and the difficulties that people may come upon.
What is the meaning of the word “relationship”? Most of us hear this word every day, in other words “a state of affairs existing between those having relations and dealings. There are four types of relationships: couple, family, and friend. Most of the relationships can be difficult, romantic relationship seem to be the most complicated types. The short story, “The Chaser”, written by John Collier, portrays an overall message that a person cannot force another person to fall in love with them; even if one person believes that they are meant to be together. The theme of the short story is about love and how it can have its deceiving ways. Love can mean many different things, depending upon who the person. If a person is forceful for love, or tricks someone for love, it’s not true love or even love at all. Through Jon Collier’s brilliant use of sarcasm, irony and symbolism, he describes how a young man tries to do whatever it takes for a woman to fall in love with him.

Not only does Tally Atwater prove that it is not about what you look like or whom you know, but what you are able to produce. If a person has the talent and integrity to work towards their goal, they will be successful. Tally teaches the viewer the importance of telling the true story regardless of societies reaction. Whether or not the public agrees with the story at hand, the truth is meant to be heard. In journalism, in the real world, society should expect the same moral conscious as Tally Atwater showed in her search for the real story.
As I shoved my notebook into my backpack, I heard my writing fellow murmur something about an essay. I wasn’t worried. After taking every Advanced Placement English class my high school offered, I felt equipped to handle a simple essay until received Dr. Carver’s email with the prompt and instructions. I blinked at the screen and rubbed my eyes; thinking I had misread the message, I read it again. I was supposed to have the essay finished in approximately 42 hours, but I had never written a decent essay in less than four days. I was in a state of panic; all of my ideas had evacuated my imagination leaving me with a painful case of writer’s block. To me, most of good writing is good editing and proper editing requires having a window to forget your writing before returning to it: a window that 42 hours just couldn’t provide.
Love is not simple or easy. The kind of love that will last over time and overcome each obstacle it brings is actually a fair amount of work. In the film Valentine’s Day there are all different kinds of love and some of them thrive while others fail by the end of the day. All these different relationships present an opportunity to analyze how different aspects of communication help people find love and make it last.
