Social media has became a major aspect in our everyday lives, it has influenced the way live, communicate, and think. In 2008 only 24% of the United States population owned a social media account, now 8 years later and that percentage has more than tripled (Statista). In recent years, our generations dependence of online social media for our everyday communication has dramatically increased because of social media sites such as Facebook. Facebook is a site that is based around the ability to share information, thoughts, and feelings quickly and cohesively amongst friends and even the whole world. Facebook users to trust Facebook’s platform to carryout the users everyday communication needs, this has caused a lack of face-to-face communication amongst people, friends, family, and loved ones. A study done by (name) shows the increasing lack of face-to-face interaction between people had increased from 6% to 16% from 2001-2007 (name). It is proven that the lack of face-to-face communication can lead to unproductive or non-meaningful conversations, which can then lead to misunderstanding, and possibly unhealthy arguments. Mercola, a website that regularly publishes health related articles, describes how a “research has shown a significant increase in the neural synchronization between the brains of two partners during face-to-face, but not during other types of, conversation” (Mercola). Adding to the study, Facebook lacks the necessities for a personal conversation that can help create creative ideas during conversation, necessities such as, facial expressions, tone of voice, and a unconscious connection between people that derives from talking Face-to-Face (Mercola). This goes to show the way that Facebook has altered the way we communicate by minimizing our Person-To-Person interactions in our daily lives, thus affecting people’s interpersonal communication, and allowing room for misinterpretation and

People feel they are on top of the world due to the numerous friends that they have on their Facebook page. Social Media began affecting our communication and relationships as early as 1969 when the first internet service provider become available to U.S. universities. In 2002, Friendster, the first social media website available to the U.S. was created and gained over 3 million members in just over 3 months. One year later, MySpace launched. In 2004, Mark Zuckerberg, a 24-year-old Harvard student, created Facebook, an online social networking service. This service was originally a way for students to interact. Today it is the world’s largest social networking service and allows over a billion users to connect though posting photos, sharing links, and comments which all appear on a “News Feed” that blasts out this information to all your virtual friends. For the current generation, this new way of communication is facilitating the act of never losing contact with anyone they have ever met. In this day and age, many individuals simply cannot go without some sort of socialization. Specifically speaking, most participate in online social networking sites. The most popular and used one is commonly known as Facebook. Facebook was created in 2004 by Mark Zuckerberg. By 2007, Facebook had over 21 million users, adding up to 1.6 billion page views every single day. The typical user spends over twenty minutes per day on Facebook and two thirds of the users log in every day at least once. It is not questionable as to why many people have a Facebook account. Facebook is generally efficient, easy for socialization, and not difficult to manage. Most organizations are affiliated with Facebook, as “almost 22,000 organizations had Facebook directories,” as of November 2006. A year after that in 2007, Facebook was named the seventh most popular website (Ellison 1). However, with anything well known, many oppose to using Facebook and hold criticism against the popular network. There are many flaws in the website and the relationships it starts online. Facebook is risking dangerous activities, ignoring privacy laws, and demeaning healthy socialization.

In the article “Negative Effects of Social Media” Ashlie Brooke Kincel states, “people begin focusing so much of their time on their relationships on social media networks that [it has] become difficult to distinguish between our real life relationships,” meaning that those who put more effort into communicating electronically can eventually be seen as neglecting their “real” relationship with someone close and it can one day become awkward or be as emotional connected as it once was. This can happen because writing through social media apps lacks body language, facial expressions, tonality and even physical contact, preventing a healthy and normal conversation. When using social media apps, people use fewer words to communicate because it is fast and it gets straight to the point. In the 2013 issue of newspaper magazine Social Work Today, the article “Social Media and Interpersonal Communication,” by Maura Keller states, “our interactions on social media tend to be weak ties—that is, we don’t feel as personally connected to the people at the other end of our communication as we do when we’re face-to-face.” Here, Keller tries to explain how communicating through social media apps does not carry the same meaning of building a social relationship as talking to someone physically because a strong connection between the people is not being made. Mark Zuckerberg founded Facebook in 2004 and its sole purpose is to give people the power to share and connect with the world. With 1.23 billion monthly active members, Facebook has certainly surpassed all other social sites. To put it in perspective that is roughly one-sixth of the entire world’s population. According to his book, Introduction to Digital Literacy Mark D. Bowles (2013) stated that Facebook is “the leading social networking site” where you can update your status, share information like photos, find friends and establish networks (pg. 184).
