As I looked over the items I had written down on my list, it was hard to find a common theme. I had wrote down things that seemed very important such as be inspiring or be professional, but then I had other points that seemed silly, such as have pajama Friday’s with my students. It actually took me a day or two to figure out why. What was my driving force behind all of these important things I had written down. I thought, maybe the reason wasn’t hidden in between the lines of this list, but within myself. So I reflected on myself, on what I believe in and why I believe in it and I finally found what I am at my center, an optimist. The most obvious is having a place that is physically safe for the child. But the most important aspect in my opinion is less obvious, and that is a place that is emotionally safe. Emotional safety to me means having an environment that is positive, and allows them to express how they feel without judgment. Within the classroom this would mean you have a space where students can relax if they are feeling upset that day. As well as just being their for your students will give them the safety they need to thrive in school. Choosing this guiding principle was obvious to me. One of my biggest goals in teaching is to have my classroom be a safe place for my students. I understand that not every child comes from a nice and loving home, and without proper guidance many of these kids will end up on the wrong path in life. These kids need someone in their life to provide them a safe place that is basically an escape from their home life. If you look back on your favorite teachers you’ve had you probably don’t remember the ones that just sat at their desk typing on their computers all day. Good, memorable teachers know how to have fun with their students. Teaching is such an amazing profession because although we work very hard, we also get to play hard too. Having fun is a key component to building lasting relationships with your students. When I think of some of the things that excite me most about becoming a teacher, I always think of pajama day. I’ve probably choose the only career where I get to wear my pajamas to work, and that is one of the best things about education. It is very important to be a professional role model for your students, but it’s almost more important to sing songs and dance together.
