“Being a teacher is the hardest, crappiest job you will ever love.” These are the words of Raina Davis, my fifth grade science teacher. Ms. Raina Davis is an educator of Prince George’s and Montgomery County and has been teaching for twelve years. In our two hour conversation, we discussed the high and lows of being an educator, the teacher-student relationship, and the significance of the area in which you teach.
Currently, Ms. Davis teaches ninth and eleventh grade students at Suitland High School in Prince George’s County. In her twelve years of teaching, she has taught third, fifth, seventh, eighth, ninth, and eleventh grade. Davis asserts that teaching is about relationships; relationships between concepts, relationships between students, and relationships between the student and teacher. Just like any relationship, it takes an investment for it to be successful. When I was in fifth grade, my school was in a weird transition that could possibly affect student readiness for middle school. Ms. Davis explained that at the time, my teachers had invested a lot of time and tough love in order to prepare us for the rigor of middle school. She explained that “teaching is a bond that never goes away” and that “teachers have a direct influence on how children see adults for the rest of their lives.” I definitely agree with this statement; the educators that I have interacted with throughout my K-12 education have characterized my view on education, educators, and adults in general. I had the pleasure of having great teachers that encouraged me to be the best I can be, lifted my confidence within myself, and taught me school concepts and ultimately life skills. Namely, Ms. Davis left a mark on my life that I never will forget. More than anything, she cared and that was enough to propel me into academic success all the way until now and I am so thankful that I am able to tell her the positive effect she had on my
