Petriliggieri says that “The United Nations estimates nearly 2.5 million people from 127 different countries are being trafficked around the world for forced labour.” Human trafficking is an international issue that affects a plethora of individuals. There are several factors that contribute to the global span of human trafficking including: gender roles, lack of education, lack of fiscal resources, and financial incentive to the perpetrators. In short, one of the greatest causes of human trafficking is money, both for the victims and the traffickers. Human Trafficking is a lucrative business where people are bought, sold, and traded as if they are property. It is important to understand as that “Human trafficking is not 'caused ' by poverty, lack of education, lack of legal status, or any other vulnerability factor: human trafficking is caused by human traffickers” (Human Trafficking). With that being said, certain financial situations often incentivize traffickers to get into the industry and for victims to be tricked into human trafficking. People who are involved in trafficking are paying their employees nothing, which means all of the profit from their labor goes directly to the traffickers. Trafficking is an incredibly lucrative business, and this is what drives many people to be involved, “today 's slaves sell for a global weighted average of US$420 and can generate 300 to 500 percent or more in annual return on investment” (Kara). As far as investments go, trafficking is a low risk high reward business. Traffickers rarely get caught, and almost always make a heaping profit.
