Human Trafficking At age fourteen, she thought she had the whole world figured out. Rolling her eyes at her parents two rooms down, she threw her bag over her shoulder and climbed through the small window. With the twisted intentions to teach her mother a lesson, the young girl ran across the yard, heading for the road. She believed that she would be coming back by lunchtime the next day, only running away long enough to make her parents worry. She thought that she was safe out there on her own, but she was wrong. She didn’t think about the predators, didn’t think about those who prey on young girls, she didn’t think about anything, but running away and that was her mistake.

With this being said, run away children are so likely to be victims due to their vulnerability, which those who have the upperhand in sex trafficking look for. Those who have the control are referred to as pimps and there are two different types: a gorilla pimp and a Romeo pimp. A gorilla pimp uses a very quick, fast-paced technique to bring young women, and men, into sex trafficking. This type looks for easily persuaded, sexually active, damaged individuals who are often motivated by poverty and have a taste for things that glitter. A Romeo pimp, however, is very different as they use a much slower technique, usually taking about two to three weeks to earn the victim’s trust. This type typically acts like a boyfriend in the beginning and slowly edges their way into her life before forcing them into prostitution. Prostitution is a chain process, and unfortunately, too many are being roped in, especially in Ohio. Due to the extensive highway systems, international borders being close by, the several large metropolitan cities, and the high poverty rate, Ohio is very vulnerable to sex trafficking. In response to this, there are multiple ways to help prevent human trafficking from happening. As mentioned during the event, it is very important for people, especially young girls, to be educated about human trafficking as it is the number one way to help prevent themselves from being a victim. In addition to this, it is important to recognize personal vulnerability factors and pursue individual healing; vulnerability is the number one thing that pimps look for when finding their victims and the less likely someone is to be vulnerable, the less likely they are to be a victim.
