Chloe was anxious I knew this because during general observation Chloe had an increased heart rate. Chloe looked pale and when using touch to reassure Chloe I noticed that her pales felt sweaty to touch. Chloe also told me she felt nervous about the central catheter insertion. The doctor reassured Chloe through conversation prior to the central venous catheter insertion.
During the conversation Chloe was given freedom of choice. Chloe was given the option to have the procedure but Chloe also had the option to not have the procedure. In order to have freedom of choice the patient needs to be offered more than one option of treatment. Chloe’s options were limited, this was an emergency procedure so the central venous catheter insertion was the only treatment option available. She required the procedure to stop the toxins building up in her body that could ultimately result in cardiac arrest and death (Ellis, 2014).
The Human Right Act (1998) is responsible for outlining the legal framework. The framework is to protect both patients’ and nurses’ rights. Patients must be able to trust nurses, this trust is build up through values by always respecting every patient’s dignity and always being open and honest with patients (Royal College of Nursing [RCN] (A), 2015). There are four main ethical aspects of consent these are justice, beneficence, non-maleficence and Autonomy. Autonomy is essential during the consent process and the patient’s right to choose their treatment option, the patients choice should be respected by the medical professional (Selinger, 2009).

The doctor did not talk through the central venous catheter insertion for my benefit because the patient was not sedated and would have hear everything (Boyd & Dare, 2014). The use of medical terminology or any form of medical abbreviations excludes the patient and will weaken trust (McEwen & Kraszewski, 2010).
The doctor was forming a therapeutic relationship with Chloe. This form of relationship enable Chloe to feel comfortable about being honest and open with the doctor. Therapeutic relationships are developed by listening and asking questions. This form of communication is about showing empathy towards Chloe, this will enable Chloe to feel relaxed. During this form of relationship it is important that the doctor has sufficient communication skills and knowledge in the renal area (Doherty & Thompson, 2014).
