How can the church live in unity? It’s very easy. Get re-focused. It’s a choice that every follower of Christ must make, but until that happens, unity will not prevail. Paul encouraged the believers of his day and showed them how to live in unity by using Christ as the example. He said, “so if there is any encouragement in Christ, any comfort from love, any participation in the Spirit, any affection and sympathy, complete my joy by being of the same mind, having the same love, being in full accord and of one mind. It starts in our mind & in our heart. The Apostle Paul says, “for the desires of the flesh are against the Spirit, and the desires of the Spirit are against the flesh, for these are opposed to each other.” As long as we feed the desires of the flesh, there can be no unity of the Spirit. Paul had a hard time addressing the followers of Christ in Corinth “as spiritual people” because they refused to mature in Christ. According to a 2013 Barna Group research poll, 73% of born-again Christians agreed that they had a personal responsibility to share their faith; however, only 52% said they actually shared the Gospel at least once within the past year. Followers of Christ, including myself, have lost the focus on winning the lost to Christ. Some churches, along with some of their members, will go to great lengths to preach against and put up signs against same-sex marriage, against abortion, against the LGBT, etc. How many of these will share the love of God without condemning them? Jesus is our example. Not once did Jesus ever condemn or belittle a lost person in whom He came into contact with. Here are just a few of the people Jesus spent time talking to: an adulterous woman caught in the act, a woman living with a man who was not her husband and had been divorced five times prior, a man who fervently killed followers of Christ and put others in jail, a man who stole from his own people and was despised by members of his own community, a man who betrayed Him for silver, and those who mocked Him while dying on a cross. Not once did Jesus ever condemned. Instead, He preached to them about their need for a Savior. He was more concerned on winning their souls to Himself so they could spend eternity with Him.
