School sponsored sports have helped many kids who are less fortunate succeed in life. School sports have even allowed many athletes to get an education and make it to college from playing sports. In an article by Marv Dumon “Using sports to motivate inner-city youth” from The examiner. They explain the importance of some type of sport that is provided in order to help the inner city youth and keeping them out of trouble and on the right path. In the article Dumon writes “With a high level of unemployment and a bad economy, it is important that the youth of today are given as many opportunities as possible. Not only will it keep them off the streets and out of jail, it will also motivate them to make something of their life, rather than feeling like they are stuck with nowhere to go. In the article, “The Case Against High-School Sports” Ripley discusses how some schools put a bigger emphasis on sports rather than academics. Ripley explains that since sports gets more attention, nobody pays attention to the academic side and their needs. According to the author, some schools are willing to do whatever it takes to make sure a sport runs, even if there is no money in the budget. She states that too much of a focus is being put on sports is affecting academic achievement negatively in American high schools. The author gives the reader three reasons why schools should focus more on academic achievement and less on sports.
Typically, the average day of a high school student consists of seven long hours of school; followed by an extracurricular activity. According to the National Federation of State High School Association (NFHS), as of 2014, there was a record high of nearly 7.8 million high school student athletes in the United States. Two experienced authors from The New York Times have contrasting views on athletics in schools. Amanda Ripley, the author of The New York Times bestseller, The Smartest Kids in the World, argues that sports should definitely be removed from high schools across the country. Amanda Ripley argues in The Atlantic in her article “The Case Against High School Sports”, that the United States place too much attention on sports rather than academics. Ripley argues that sports programs at schools should be reduced, maybe even cut out completely. She states that there are a lot of countries that outperform America on international tests, and it is because they put more of their emphasis on academics, where the United States puts more of an emphasis on athletics. Ripley says that high school sports negatively affects academics. (1). I disagree with Ripley on this topic; I think that sports are important for young kids because it teaches them very valuable life lessons and it keeps them out of trouble.
Athletics in American schools have always been controversial for many reasons. Some of these reasons include health concerns, safety precautions, and academic significance. Daniel H. Bowen and Colin Hitt wrote an article titled, “High-School Sports Aren’t Killing Academics” to present the factors of positive correlation between success in athletics and academics. I believe that athletics in high schools not only benefit students socially, but also academically.
According to statistics gathered by youth sports organizations, “Up to 50 million kids play youth sports in America, and 73 percent who begin playing a sport quit before they turn 13” (Binns). The children could have quit because they did not like the disappointment of losing, or because they are exhausted from their parents pushing them too hard. But parents have their reasons for pushing their children into sports. “Studies show that kids who play sports are less likely to become obese, abuse drugs or alcohol or to perform poorly in school” (McCormick). If children are not active, then they will most likely become overweight, and if they have nothing to do in their pastime, they may turn to drugs and alcohol, which usually leads to a decrease of grades in school. A parent putting his/her child in sports gives the child something to do and keeps them fit. Parents also put their child in a sport hoping that he/she will get success out of it “Eager to nurture the next A-Rod or Michelle Kwan, parents enroll their 5- or 6-year-olds in a competitive sports league or program” (Stenson). While not all parents are pushing for future Olympians, the fight for a sports college scholarship is competitive and parents may feel that their child will have a better chance of gaining one if he/she starts competitive sports early. Parents push their children to succeed, and children--not wanting to disappoint their parents--push themselves, sometimes harder than they should. If done right, pushing a child into sports can have a positive effect on the child’s interaction with other children while teaching them commitment and healthy competition. Sports require hard work and dedication to play on a good team. Going to practices and games is effort and time to keep organized. When you are playing a sport like football coaches often choose the students with the best grades because they feel that they would keep up with their homework while playing this sport. Working hard during school and sports can help you to get stronger and learn more. “Working hard is important; if you don’t put in the time and effort of your academics, it will be hard to maintain good grades.”
Are high school sports beneficial or not for students? I personally believe if a student is in a high school sport they’re forced to prioritize between school and their sport, and at a young age I believe the student would decide to use his time to improve in his sport instead of school. Which in the long run would affect his academics, unless they decide to stay up late and work on their homework to keep up with both school and their sport. But, even like that, in time, the lack of sleep would catch up to them, and cause them to do even worse in both academics, and sports. High school sports are like the lotto in my opinion, many play but only a few get rewarded for their work.
Sports activities and interests provide many positive opportunities for children. However, they can also cause some problems. Many parents believe that participation in sports will enhance children’s school accomplishments, while others believe that sports get in the way of their children’s achievement. Sports is an important part of a student’s life. It enhances their physical abilities and capacity. I believe that there isn’t too much emphasis placed on sports but it is a significant and substantial aspect in the life of a student.
Sports programs have been an integral part of all schools. They support the academics of the school and therefore foster success in life. These programs are educational and help produce productive citizenship. They help students experience and build skills that may help them in their future, like interpersonal and time management skills. Education may kindle the light of knowledge, but sports help to maintain the proper physique. Sports are also an important means of entertainment and a use for energy after long hours of study. Sports increase a student’s performance not only in the classroom but also in their life.
We know it’s a fact that parents want the best for their children. So when their baby girl or boy enter high school, they most likely wants them to focus just on academics and overlook the other activities that the school offers. One of the activities is playing sports. High school encourages the student to take part in sports due to the benefits and it give an extra touch to the college application. It’s required to take at least two years of physical education in high school so might as well join a sports. Playing sports help high school students learn life lessons, make friends and it’s a good way to reduces stress.

For some people, high school is just a place to make friends and be popular and others use high school to get somewhere in their lives and be successful. Most students gravitate towards popularity and neglect their grades causing them to have problems later on in their adult lives. The real problem with students valuing sports and social status over making good grades and being a good student is the faculty, allowing it to happen by not recognizing other school activities during announcements and pep rallies. The students who do not join sports join other underappreciated school activities, and are not supported in the fullest capacity.
