The topic chosen rom Healthy People 2010 is nutrition and weight status with a focus on children ages 2 years and older. The goal is to increase the consumption of dark green and orange vegetables as well as legumes into their diets.
In December 2010, the Journal of the American Dietetic Association in December 2010 published an article regarding the diets of young children. It was reported that preschool-age children consumed excessive amounts sodium, saturated fat, and added sugar and lacked in the consumption of fruits, vegetables, and whole grains. It also showed that approximately 85% of preschoolers drank a sweetened beverage, ate dessert, or a sweet or salty snack each day (Cooper, 2011).
In 2010, the number of American children who are 2-5 years old and obese is currently 10.4% according to the National Center for Health Statistics (Edelman, 2014, p. 231). Ohio is exceeding in these national statistics. Additionally, the Pediatric Nutrition Surveillance System (PedNSS) evaluated children in the age range of 2-5 years whose families participated in WIC in 2008. It indicated that 28.0% of the children were overweight or obese in Ohio (Ohio Data Resource Center, n. d.). Of the adult population in Putnam County, Ohio, an alarming 80.8 percent reported consuming fewer than the minimum recommended five servings of fruits and vegetables daily (Healthy Ohio Community, 2008). There was no statistic evaluating this in children but it does show how it could directly relate to this population.

...the consumption of vegetables and legumes efforts would start locally and then spread to other towns if the plan was effective. Some resources that are available to the area are county health department, the Ohio Market Maker, and the Farm to School Ohio Initiative. These three resources will serve as the basis for this project.
A survey tool used to collect objective data from the children and their parents will be used. All the data will then be analyzed and put into simple graphs. This will be the best method to ensure easy understanding of the outcomes for the population to see. Some of the areas that will be researched include height and weight, blood pressure, pulse, dietary consumption before and after experiment. To keep the study unbiased, those children with allergies and dietary restrictions would be excluded from the study at this time.
