When we try to define health, the general definition would be the absence of disease. The “World Health Organization” (2013) would define health in a formal way as “a state of physical, mental, and social well-being and not merely the absence of disease or infirmity”. Good health is something that is essential to human happiness and well being. Good health also makes a strong contribution to the economic progress. Healthy populations will often live longer, and can be a direct result in economic growth due to the fact that there will be more people able to effectively conduct activities in the workforce. It is important to understand that health is not a biological phenomenon; it is culturally defined and practiced. How one culture defines good health and how another society defines it is dependent on the norms and social regulations for that specific society. There is a decrease in poverty due to medical costs, all people will have a fair and equal access to health care which promotes equality, the overall improved health of the population and decrease of illnesses, doctors and other health care professionals can concentrate on treating their patient instead of worrying about paperwork, insurance procedures etc. Also, many people will not seek preventative care in order to save money, with universal health care; people would be much more obliged to seek preventative treatment and seek medical help earlier on when the treatment is not so aggressive. Amartya Sen believes that the only fair thing to do is have a universal health care system which is absolutely logical and rational.
