There are many challenges when it comes to our health care system that define the future strategic direction. The one chosen for this paper are reform and legislation, information technology advancements such as the electronic medical record (EMR)/ electronic health record (EHR), access to health care including the uninsured and those in the poverty levels, maintaining a skilled workforce and Pay for performance. These challenges pose threats to our health care system planning for the future.
One of many challenges is health care reform and legislation. First off to reform our health care system you must have people who know what they are doing. These people should look at the global processes to see how they are doing things to set the pace of how we are to reform our system for the future. One measure of reform in which President Barack Obama signed into law is the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act (PPACA). This act made changes to how insurance companies could operate. They can no longer not charge their members based on gender. Before the burden was on men with the health care costs of women. Parents are able to keep their children on their insurance until they are 26. It expanded Medicaid to people without dependent children at the discrepancy of the state they live in and subsidized health care changes. They are no longer able to drop members when they got sick, gave tax credits to companies who provide insurance to employees and much more. The health care system must provide a skilled workforce in each organization. The organizations compete with each other to have the best workforce. Some of the keys to getting a skilled workforce is to have competitive pay, pleasant work environment, benefit plans and a reward system. It is proven when you have a happy workforce more things get done and the pleasantness will transfer to the patients and the community.
An organization can adapt its direction and strategies to effectively address these challenges by being in tune with its employees and the community. The organization has to look at things on a global basis. It is important to know what is working around the world and most importantly, what is not working. Always look at ways they can incorporate something being done successfully somewhere else into their programs.
