Time is viewed in many different ways. Some would say that time seems to fly by too fast; others would say that time drags on. Everybody has a different perspective on what time feels like and just as it is to be expected, time affects people in many different ways. Certain people are affected by events everyday in life. Somebody might have experienced a loss in the family or a very traumatic accident. Many people deal with that loss and everybody copes differently. Everybody grieves and in some cases the grieving process never stops. In many cases, you may grieve for a little while and over the year’s people learn to accept it, realizing that they can’t dwell on that forever. Time is inevitable, even if you want time to slow down or stop completely, it is simply impossible. Throughout life everybody deals with the factor of time. Some may want to savor a moment or possibly want time to fly by but, no matter what, time moves at the same pace and speed it always has. Time won’t stop just because you want it to, time won’t stop to run on your scheduled time. Time will go on forever and the way you deal with that acceptance is different for everyone. Daisy and Gatsby deal with their past relationship and they both have to decide for themselves what that time span apart did to them and how it affected them. Daisy took that time apart and uses it as acceptance and healing, she develops a family and she seems to have the knowledge that if she didn’t move on now then, she would be missing out on certain things and didn’t want to throw those years away. Gatsby doesn’t fully connect the pieces that time moves on and while his life was on hold for Daisy, little did he know that she has already moved on. Both of those individuals were dealt with the same cards, but it’s what you do with your cards that affects the outcome of the game. You could either, fold your hand and try to find a better hand for later, or you can check and stick with that hand for too long and lose all of your money. There is a beautiful quote by Shakespeare saying, “Time is very slow for those who wait, very fast for those who are scared, very long for those who lament, very short for those who celebrate, but for those who love. Time is eternal” (Shakespeare). Daisy knew when to let go and while she is developing a life for herself, Gatsby is still holding on to what could have been five years ago.
