L’Etat c’est moi”, also known as “I am the state”, was said by one of the most influential Kings that France had ever seen. Louis XIV, had not only changed France in ways no other King had previously done, but he also reigned for one of the longest terms, seventy-two years. Some previously referred to Louis as “le Grande” or “le Roi Soleil”, which mean “The Great” and “The Sun King”, even still today, the people in France believe that during Louis rule, this time period could be considered “The Golden Century”. Although some people disliked Louis XIV, as the main source of power in France, Louis was the symbol of what he stood for, Absolutism. Louis XIV was born on September 5th, 1638, and was declared the “God given son” and only son of Louis XIII and his wife, Anne of Austria. Louis had also been considered to be seen as a miracle. Louis’ father passed away when he was just four years old, so being the only child of his parents, he had to take over the throne. Most people believed that he was the child that was “spoiled” but in reality, Louis had been neglected as a child and was often forgotten about daily. For example, Louis had been playing around by a pond, and nearly drowned because no one had been watching him. In the result of being neglected by his own mother, Louis was mainly watched over by the servants, they had become his true family throughout his childhood. There had been a rumor that because the protégé of Cardinal Richelieu, Jules Mazarin, had been taking care of Louis, he had been his actual father. Since Anne and Louis XIII, Louis XIV’s father, love life had been dull there were valid points on Mazarin being his father. Not only was Mazarin watching over Louis but he was also guiding him and help... ... middle of paper ... ...y to control religion. Then had come the rise of Jean Baptiste Colbert. Louis had fired his old finance minister and gave the job to a trusted ally. Colbert had brought the practice of Mercantilism to France. Mercantilism is the theory in economy that trade creates wealth and is started by the growing profit, which any government should encourage by hope of protection. He had also made not only Louis XIV rich, but also made France rich as well. Louis not only changed religion for what he believed in but because of the Frond, he changed the military as well. Historically, the nobles had run the military and served as generals, which had upset the King immensely. So, he decided to change it, Louis decided that he would create a military that was only loyal to him and that wouldn’t go against anything he requested, these men were called “Administrators”.
