The fear of someone having a sexuality or gender that does not fit within the strict confines of cisgender heterosexuality usually takes the form of aggressive intolerance towards those who identify as lesbian, gay bisexual, transgender, or queer (LGBTQ). This kind of fear is known as homophobia and in some cases homophobia can keep some people away from intuitions of education. In classrooms all across America there are LGBTQ students facing the hardship of living in country where homophobia is seen as acceptable. School are supposed to be safe places meant to aid children on their journey to personal growth. A teacher who really wants to help has to first keep a check of all their homophobic tendencies and make sure they do not affect how they interact with their student. This can be done by punishing homophobic behavior whenever it has been witness or reported. Also as a teacher just being someone available to talk to can help LGBTQ students. If the teacher wants to make changes throughout the school and not just the classroom they are options. One is supporting or creating a program specifically made to helping ensure the safety of LGBTQ student. The other option is to suggest that all the teacher go through some training to help all the teacher better understand how to handle situations involving LGBTQ students. Administrators can create and inforce policies that seek to stop all anti-gay actions towards all students. They have the power to make learning anti-homophobia works mandatory for everyone working within school.
