Family Culture Night at School

1245 Words3 Pages

Educators must encourage parents of all cultures to become part of the school culture.
One way to do this is through activities. One activity a teacher can collaborate is “Family
Culture Night” The purpose of this activity is to recognize a culture by having a night celebrating
One groups culture. This celebration is used to publically recognize and celebrate a specific culture.(Sjar,2011) This celebration is targeted at the culture group, however, it is geared to the class as well. It allows the class to be familiar with the cultures of the group. In order for the night to be purposeful and fun all classes should have the same culture.
There is many things that go into facilitating such an event. One you must find a time that is suitable for many of the parents. This can be done through a survey. Ensuring that you are scheduling an event to accommodate as many people as possible will make parents feel appreciate and more people that make appearance to the event.(Syrja,2011,1801) This help solve the problem that most teachers are worried about: people not showing up.
Once the event has been schedule find any Ell parents who want to be involved in helping designing the celebration. When contacting them make sure you make a phone call and not just send a letter home with the children. By having you call the parent directly it is more personal. It may also be helpful if messages to the family are sent in their primary language. This makes the family feel comfortable and more appreciated for their culture. Calling helps make sure there will be help in planning the event.
The designing process is up to the teachers, parents, and students. However, all events

should have food, entertainment, and some kind of...

...ish language. They are also targeted in not

only helping the students but the faculty and the parents as well. It is important to remember that

instructions and strategies mat be altered based on the child’s acquisitions levels and based on

the child’s affective filter. The higher the filter the harder a teacher must work on strategies and

the environment to make the child feel comfortable.

The biggest difference between the third activity and the first two is that it is more

targeted into getting ELLs to get to know the American Culture. The first two activities,

however, are more targeted toward helping ELLs to share their culture. .

Regardless of the strategies or activities a teacher chooses hopefully will end with the

ultimate goal., for children to be more cultural diverse and become one step closer from being no

longer a ELL student.
