While most people know exercise & movement are an important part of their life, this knowledge does not always translate into action. Unfortunately, those who live sedentary lifestyles put themselves at risk of premature death. While millions of people start exercise programs each year, particularly as New Year 's resolutions, many do not continue through with the program. Roughly half of those who join a health club quit within the first six months, and only about 20 percent of Americans are meeting the daily recommended exercise levels. If you are among the other 80 percent, particularly if you rarely exercise, you might be wondering how you can start and stick with an exercise program.
Pick Something You Enjoy

You might not enjoy jogging around your neighborhood or going to the gym to lift weights, but there are likely ways you can get exercise that you find enjoyable. Join an adult sports league. Take a dance class. Play tag with your kids in the backyard. Play a game with your family that gets you all moving. You could even bike or walk to work or to a friend 's house.

Just because your friend can run two miles without walking or can bench press half her weight after two months of training does not mean you should force yourself to be at that same level. Avoiding injuries is more important than trying to compete with your friend. It does not do you any good to work really hard for two or three days only to suffer an injury that sidelines you for several weeks. Push yourself without hurting yourself.
