According to the Central Intelligence Office of the United States of America, in 2010 world life expectancy at birth was 67.2 years. This number is more than double that of years of life expectancy at birth in the early 20th century, which was reported as 31 years. This increase in life expectancy is a direct outcome of acceleration in medical advancements and breakthroughs during the early and late 20th century. A greater understanding of disease diagnosis, treatment, and cure has been a result of often intersecting advancements in biology, chemistry, microbiology, physiology, pharmacology, and medical technology. Attributing to longer life expectancy and better life quality has been the numerous advancements in medical technology or medical devices. Food and Drug Administration, which is the United States federal agency responsible for regulating medical devices defines a medical device as is an instrument, apparatus, implant, in vitro reagent, or similar or related article that is used to diagnose, prevent, or treat disease or other conditions, and does not achieve its purposes through chemical action within or on the body .
Prior to 1900’s medical technology was limited to a few, albeit important medical breakthroughs. These breakthroughs included the stethoscope, eyeglasses, using diethyl ester as anesthesia, discovery of x-rays, and the flexible catheter. Prior to 1752, tubes inserted through the urethra into the bladder to drain urine from the body known as catheters were rigid and hard until Benjamin Franklin revamped traditional catheters by constructing them with flexible tubing. Medicine has been developed and discovered for thousands of years; however, the 1920’s was the first decade that fashioned a pathway for new developments and discoveries. Medical professionals have taken a huge hit for their fight in finding new inventions that can save patients from death’s hands. In the 1920’s, medicine has also taken a tremendous leap in controlling fatal diseases such as diabetes (Pendergast 110). Medicine in the 1920’s has altered the way medicine is shaped today; furthermore, the development and discovery of the iron lung, penicillin, and insulin were the first pertinent breakthroughs in medical history (“Iron” par. 7; Grimsley par. 15; “Banting” par. 13).
With better and upgraded technology, doctors can diagnose, treat and send a patient home faster than ever before.

Over the years the medical field has always brought together the best and brightest of society to help those in need. From treating cancer and delivering babies to dealing with heart attacks, doctors have developed technology and improved techniques. The three main changes that are revolutionizing the medical field are electronic medical records, population science and clinical practice guidelines. With the help of advanced technology, evaluating patients on a large scale, physicians can view the death rate, life span and frequency of illness throughout the healthcare system. On an individual basis, the physician can treat an illness. When the entire population is considered, issues such as cancer, heart disease and obesity are a growing epidemic. Population science can allow doctors to look at a large-scale way to cure these epidemics instead of just treating an individual. These epidemiological principles are now used in clinical studies to make the evaluation of medical procedures better.

Longevity is a foreign word when it comes to the love lives of young socialites. Family obligations, careers, and scandals often get in the way of long lasting relationships. It is almost a rule. The good thing for Olivia Palermo and Johannes Huebl is that every rule has at least one exception. They met in St. Bart’s in 2008 and have been going strong every since. The location became so special that they return there every year, and even became the spot of a very important part of their relationship. More on that in a little bit.

Technology changes rapidly to help us and make everyone's life better. Our life may become easier thanks to technology, but what about all of the malfunctions or inaccurate information technology may bring us. Starting at the rate of survival, following the age of the patient, ending it with the reliability of the technology. Will all of this be right to prolong life just by using a machine. The contributions of several doctors, researchers, and scientists helped improve the health of the growing population. In 1850, the average life expectancy was 42 years. By 1910, the average life expectancy had risen to nearly 55 years. Between 1850 and 1910 there were several advances in the medical field. The introduction of genes, white blood cells, blood groups, insulin, rubber gloves, aspirin, and vitamins and the discoveries of Pasteur, Charcot, Halsted, Zirm, Lister, and Koch were the starting point of an international fight against disease.
In the 1700’s things were very different to life today; this included the medicine of the time. The idea of medicine came from the Greeks and they came up with the four humours (consisting of water, fire, air and earth.) By the 1840’s most anaesthetics were accepted as James Simpson presented a powerful case for them; however they didn’t make surgery safer and the amount of people dying from operations increased. The final breakthrough for anaesthetics was when Queen Victoria accepted the use of Chloroform during the delivery of her eighth child. Even though being anesthetised was less painful surgeons did not take any precautions to protect open wounds and infections were spread by the reuse of old bandages!

The invention of machines occurred in the Egyptian city of Alexandria in the 3rd century BCE and had a profound effect on the practice of medicine “Berrey Alexandrian Physiology.” The invention of machines, such as valves, pumps, levers, and wedges influenced the way in which ancient physicians described and understood the body, in addition to providing new methods for treating conditions. Machines provided a means to treat previously untreatable conditions, served as a form of entertainment, and contributed to a separation of power between medical practitioners.
Technology in terms of medicine has also increased the life expectancy of the average person. With new technological advancements in surgeries, medicines and treatments the average life expectancy is still on the increase. A recent study shows that the average life span for 2004 of a United States Citizen is 77.4 years old. This has increased significantly from 1900 where the average lifespan for a male was 48.2 and for the female 51.5. Thanks to technology we can now live longer.
