When it comes to marketing and advertising, there is a lot of controversy surrounding the tactics employed and there are many questions that arise as a result. There are many assumptions made in terms of both consumption and disposition controversies. It is the responsibility of marketers not to feed into the controversy in order to avoid unwanted negative attention. Thus, marketers should be highly aware of the controversies and aim to develop strategies that balance the best interest of both their company and their consumers. Though the controversies are tough to tackle at times due to their evident challenges and complexity, it is important that marketers have a plan.
Of the many controversies surrounding consumption, marketers face the questions of their role in idealized self-images, overeating and obesity, and privacy invasion controversies. Consumers are faced with idealized self-images every day whether it be through social media, television, or print advertisements. The models depicted in advertisements, both male and female, represent society’s conception of beauty. Marketers are encouraged to minimize the advertisement of unhealthy foods and snacks in order to help discourage the younger audience from partaking in unhealthy eating. “Ads for junk food significantly increased food consumption in children” (Barclay, 2016). Many times, popular children’s characters are used to promote unhealthy foods aimed to capture the attention of young consumers which is frowned upon.
