Common Effects of Peer Pressure
Some people may say that peer pressure is an inevitable part of an adolescent’s life even though that in many cases it has led to far more negative outcomes. Peer pressure has been a problematic behavior since the beginning of human comradeship , and it has led to numerous problems for the victimized teenagers . The most common problems that are usually caused by peer pressure include gang involvement, drug use and thievery .These problems wreak havoc in the adolescent’s life either with the law or with their community .
This corrupting behavior has often led in provoking a desperation for acceptance in teenagers . According to the article “What is Peer Pressure” it states that teens at this stage in their adolescent life are attracted to the desire to belong to a group were they feel support and acceptance. Gangs have almost perfected their methods in persuading teenagers into their heinous traps. Gangs often provide a sense of family to the victims and also give off a sense of “cool” to their look to make them more appealing to young teens. According to the article “Why People Join Gangs” it presents the theory that gangs have mastered an art of manipulation to attract their potential recruits. The gangs also offer a hip image that has been unfortunately glorified by the media. This event unfortunately occurs far too often in our community and it is a real setback for the victim .In joining a gang the teen is rejecting the community’s way of dressing and behaving , causing problems with either law enforcement or the community . Stealing has almost like a snowball effect on teens it’s almost like a drug in some sense they get a little taste and then realize how easy and fun it is to obtain stolen items and keep doing it not really measuring the consequences if they get caught . There is also almost like a “high” that shoplifters get from stealing according to the “National Learning and Resource Center”:
It states that a person's addiction to shoplifting can develop quickly when the excitement generated from "getting away with it" produces a chemical reaction (adrenaline), resulting in what shoplifters describe as an incredible "rush" or "high" feeling, which many shoplifters will tell you is the "true reward," rather than the merchandise itself.
