The drug also acts as a proven pain reliever. When the THC enters the brain, it slows and reduces the sensitivity and reaction time of pain-sensor neurons. As a result, it can be very effective in the treatment of migraines, premenstrual syndrome, chronic back pain, and other illnesses with painful side effects.
Doctors have argued for years whether the effects of the THC chemical on the brain are harmful or helpful. Although many can agree that it is helpful in treating medical conditions, the debate over its health risks for those who use it recreationally is ongoing. The chemicals in marijuana are much less addictive than those in other drugs. About 10% of users develop a dependence to the drug, compared to 30% of cigarette smokers who become addicted to tobacco. There have never been any reported deaths caused by marijuana (Goode). Some of the most severe symptoms reported as “overdosages” include extreme dizziness, panic, paranoia, or vomiting.
Along with the recreational and medical benefits, legalizing marijuana can generate tax revenue and economic stimulation. According to Forbes.com, “Colorado pulled in $2 million in taxes related to the sale of recreational marijuana…. Combined with taxes on sales from medicinal marijuana, the state pulled in nearly $3.5 million in pot-related tax revenue” (Erb). This clearly demonstrates the significant economic benefits of legalizing marijuana.
Despite the proven medical benefits and minimal negative health risks, marijuana is still illegal in most places in the country. Every state in the US enforces some kind of regulations about personal use of the drug. Cannabis can be very beneficial and medicinal for those suffering from a variety of medical disorders, and is less dangerous than alcohol, which is legal. It can generate tax revenue and benefit the economy when sold legally. Still, most states consider it unlawful to consume or sell. Because it provides numerous medicinal advantages, comfort and recreation for many people, and economic benefits, marijuana should be legal for personal use.
