There was a statement that Congressman Blumenauer had made that marijuana was the “gateway drug”, there are other officials and police that agree with him. I beg to differ. If one wanted to get technical alcohol is considered a drug, why then hasn’t anyone made the accusation that alcohol is the “gateway drug”? I do acknowledge that there are legitimate cons to legalizing marijuana, such as the increasing chance that it may fall into the hands of kids. Or that legalizing marijuana could increase serious crimes, but kids are smoking and drinking now and marijuana isn’t legal.
Marijuana has been around for centuries and has been used for many things, such as the oil in the cannabis plant, which is high in protein and essential fatty acids, or the plant is dried and made into hemp, and hemp into baskets or bracelets. Other than protein and crafts, marijuana has long been used for recreational purposes. With the underground black market controlling the trade of marijuana, it poses more risks than legalizing it. Marijuana is highly illegal in the United States, and the repercussions are very harsh, in some places more than others. Recreational marijuana use should be regulated or decriminalized.

Though some discount it as a harmful substance, there are many others who worry about increased criminal behavior, addiction and other health problems that can arise from its use. But more importantly they are concerned about the message teenagers would get if marijuana was legalized for recreational use. Since marijuana is a natural product many people may think it is safe to use, but it is known to affect a person’s thoughts, ability, and reactions. And, for this reason, there are questions as to the threat it poses. It is prepared from the flowers, stems, seeds, and leaves of the hemp plant Cannabis sativa.
According to Dr. Robert DuPont, marijuana is the most commonly abused illegal drug is the U.S. and around the world. Marijuana legalization is a liberal position which will give many benefits to those who are already consume it, and if marijuana is ever legalized, then “individuals rights will outnumber the needs of society” (Feder). Individual rights are important to the country too, but legalization should benefit the whole country, not only the individuals who liberally already use marijuana as an escape to their everyday life problems. Many marijuana advocates will say that it is not harmful because it is organic therefore marijuana is believed to be less harmful than the other chemically substance drugs like cocaine and heroin. Nevertheless, “marijuana has been shown to impair perception, speed of motion and accuracy in tasks” (Giannasio).
Marijuana sometimes comes with a bad reputation but its positives outweigh the negatives. Weed is a greenish substance mixed of dried, shredded leaves, stems, and seeds that come from the hemp plant Cannabis Sativa. The chemical that gives you symptoms such as red eyes or dry mouth, is tetrahydrocannabinol (THC). Once it is inhaled or digested, the chemical flows through your bloodstream to effect your brain. Other symptoms that may occur are rapid heart rate, increased blood pressure, increased rate of breathing, increased appetite, and slowed reaction time.
We also have various arguments from the medical perspective and how they claim it can be beneficial to various individuals. Then there is another argument which brings up the fact that while marijuana remains to be illegal we will see an increase in criminal activity not just from the United States but the international borders as well. We need to realize that legalizing marijuana would be a huge step into creating a sense of revenue within the United States without the problems that alcohol and cigarettes bring. Marijuana can ruin people’s lives by making a criminal record for those who simply choose to be in possession and smoke marijuana. Why should the government continue to inflict harm on a drug that has virtually no reason to be banned in the first place?
