In the course of more than sixty years, the roles of women in both the society and in film have drastically changed. The present roles of women in society are at par to those of men; however this was not always the case. Since the 1950’s, women have evolved from their submissive and men-dependent disposition to independent women which is visibly shown in the contemporary society. Along with this newfound independence comes women’s realization of internal beauty – which was out of the ordinary during the 1950’s to the early 1960’s wherein the ideology that a woman’s beauty is based on her physical appearance was pervasive among society. In the later part of the 1960’s, women fought for independence and equality, which led to the establishment of the roles they now play in modern society. At the present time, some of the most influential people are women – politicians, philanthropists and entrepreneurs, which are immeasurably distant from their roles as housewives or homemakers in the past. However, these transformations do not work alone; there are factors that have greatly influenced these changes, one of which is how filmmakers’ portray women in society.Film has sparked social ideals like the Beauty Ideal that transformed into a gruesome Thin Ideal whichposed as a reminder to women of how beauty is supposed to be. Unfortunately, even if film reflects what happens in society, they have created negative portrayals of women that outweigh the positive portrayals of women in film and are continually being carried on in film and in society. American filmmakers’ portrayal of women should continue to emphasize the importance of their roles in society.

Women now play influential roles in society – political leaders, business CEOs just to name a few. Women are capable of so much and it will only get better. Women have transformed a whole lot since the 1950’s which shows that women are powerful and able to transform into better individuals in the future. Eventually, filmmakers’ will show an improvement in the portrayal of women in films. Since there are positive and successful women in society now; there is hope for women in film because film aims to reflect society and once film reflects this even more, women will become stronger individuals and the future of women will be brighter.
