From past to present, men have dominated women in media. Media is a big part of people’s everyday lives. It influences how we see ourselves and the world. There are many different types of media like movies, television shows, newspapers, advertisements, etc. In these different forms of media, there are images of men and women who are represented in different ways and characteristics. In both films, Changeling (2008) and The Prize Winner of Defiance, Ohio (2005), a woman, not a man is the main character. These two movies are based off of a true story from a woman’s perspective. Men go to work, make money, and spends it on electric bills, food, and things the family needs. In The Prize Winner of Defiance, Ohio, the father is the opposite of what men should do. Evelyn uses her skills as a jingle writer to win the television contests. Evelyn’s winnings in cash and products keep the family afloat (Holden 1). The audience see a mother rather than an ideal father, take over to support the family. The mother is seen cooking, taking care of her ten children and husband, and winning contests while the father works as a machinist and spends his paychecks on alcohol. From “What Are Men Food For?” by Jared Diamond, he states “…criticizing those men who provide better for themselves than their wives and children.” (Composition & Research 1018). Evelyn’s husband, Kelly, rids his pain by consuming alcohol. From “Why Men Don’t Last” by Natalie Angier, Angier cites outside sources like Dr. Pollack of the Center for Men who says “Men in our culture are pretty much limited to a menu of three strong feelings: rage, triumph, and lust.” Which means men are not too emotional like women or else they will be seen as a ‘sissy’ (Composition & Research 1011). Kelly use to a singer before he got into an accident that destroyed his voice. Alcohol helps him cope with his pain and he is sadden when his wife is able to sing and create lyrics to the jingle contest.
