Quarter Writing Evaluation
This first quarter has not been easy. I have added an additional level four to my schedule and on top of that trying to mange other things outside of school, such as dance, homework, and family time. Espically since for me English doesn't come easy. In grade school it was my weakness and it was challenging to me. So in eighth grade when my english teacher said I could try to get into level four english, and I got in, I was extremely surprised. Being able to watch myself grow specifically in English is a great thing. Now even knowing I have already been growing in this past quarter I am even more excited to spend the rest of the year with you.
This past quarter I had the most issues with exams a tests. My first test I failed even when I worked exteremely hard on taking notes while I was reading and studying alot before the test. Also my first couple essays were not that good. I had many simple mistakes on each of them and hopefully I can make sure I don't make those mistakes next time. Now I sucessfully know how to cite my sources on the citation page and ...
Other than learning how to argue (my boyfriend loves my new ability) I learned how to source my research using MLA format. This new skill is tremendously important in college because most professors, if not all, require their papers to be submitted using MLA format. Throughout my upcoming years at Valencia and then The University of Central Florida I will find writing papers significantly easier because sourcing will be practically second nature. In class we were taught how to use the in-text reference throughout our papers, build our own citation and how to set up our work cited page. Although in high school we used the MLA format for papers, prior to taking this class I hadn’t noticed how many small details go into the actual citation, the authors name is last name then first name, the commas must be in the proper place, page numbers etc. In some classes you “learn” how to do things however it is only stored in short term memory because you don’t consider it an important attribute or useful for future classes. Personally, I made sure I knew how to do MLA, every aspect of it, I reviewed the rules, did my assignments, and then reviewed my assignments in order to store this new skill in long term memory. By doing this I have successfully transferred the information to long term memory and made it into a skill.
Happy New Year and the second semester of the school year. The first semester was a test on how students would blend into the new academics. Honors English was a great choice I made in middle school and I would recommend it to any incoming freshman. I have learned new ways to create claims and the proper way to set up paragraphs. Learning the way to set up paragraphs has improved my writing skills, even out of the english classroom. English comes in handy in the World Geography classroom as I have learned and may be useful in the future.
The story I chose for this analysis is “Why, you reckon?” by Langston Hughes. IN this analysis I will be focusing on how the great depression in Harlem had effect on the story, how racism played a part, and how or if the characters were justifyied in their actions. During this time period the intense racial divide combined with the economic harships that plagued the U.S. during the 1923’s makes for an interesting story that makes you think if the charaters were really justified.
The 1990’s were responsible for a plethora of powerful music. While many may correlate this decade with pop stars like Brittany Spears and Christina Aguilera’s brand of bubble gum mainstream music, there were many women who did not resign themselves to the conventional. Artists like Courtney Love and Fiona Apple hit the music scene during this decade. They introduced the world to a new brand of female power unlike anything the world had seen. During this time, these women and many others were not afraid to call themselves feminists, in fact, they insisted upon it. This decade was responsible for some of the most powerful female anthems from many different genres of music but one song stood out above the rest and made singer-songwriter Alanis Morissette a world-wide phenomenon.
Oral history is history that comes from the people which have lived and experienced during that time. For example, Appy is interviewing a Vietnamese man named Thuy in the back of a Taxi. During this interview Thuy turns to him and said “do you realize we are the only nation in the world that has defeated 3 out of the 5 permanent members of the united nations security council?” (Appy XVIII). I think the decision Appy made to use oral history is wise because I feel like you get a more authentic view of what happened and how things happened when you interview a person instead of just researching what other people have come up with. People can twist things in a whatever way they want to to make you see things the way they want you to but with
Imagine if animals were free to roam everywhere and we lived amongst animals. In the novel We Are All Completely Beside Ourselves by Karen Fowler, Fowlers asks her readers to think about whether using animals to conduct experiments is ethical? She explains that many people believe that the crucial difference between humans and the rest of the animal is we believe that we are the only animals that have a theory of mind, which is the ability to attribute mental states such as desires, intents, or beliefs, to oneself and others also to understand that other beliefs, desires, and perspectives are different from one’s own. Rather this ethical framework has been proven wrong and many people still believe it. Chimps have shown to have a theory of
A meme is a versatile idea that consists of amusing images, videos, or text. Kermit the Frog’s, “But That’s None of my Business” meme relies on the use of mockery to offend somebody with opposing views from the creator. However, the social critique embedded in this meme adds humor and lightheartedness. By using irony to highlight controversial opinions, these memes reflect a difference in the beliefs of everyday people. In order for this meme to properly make sense, one must understand how the top and bottom text correspond to one another.
I'm so excited to be taking accelerated English in your class this year! I've heard so many good things about you and your class. I'm not going to lie though, I'm more of a math and science person than an English person. I feel that this year with a fun class, I'll be able to accelerate in English.
So, anytime a hip-hop/rap or R&B artist who may or may not have some kind of credibility as a lyricist releases a new record, these click-bait "X Amount of Writers are Credited on ____'s New Album" articles always seem to pop up. The purpose is usually to subliminally invalidate the artist's skill-set and fuel debates on whether they're talented or not. It's been done with Kanye West (The Life of Pablo had 103 writers), Beyoncé (Lemonade=72 writers) and now Drake (Views=81 writers). That sounds like a lot of Pablos, views and gallons of lemonade, but hold up! There's a little technicality to be mindful of. Not even half of the individuals listed did any literal writing. To be honest, I wouldn't be surprised if no more than 10 people actually assisted. Let me explain...
To get the results, I will attach ticker tape to the back of the car,
During the course of the quarter, I feel that I have progressed somewhat. I've gained a lot of knowledge on rhetorical strategies and how to present arguments effectively. In the writings I have written, I feel that each writing works towards meeting the course goals. Logos, ethos, and pathos were strategies and ideas we were introduced to (if not already in the past) and were built upon throughout the quarter. The knowledge gained over the course of the quarter weren't only those three types of appeals. Rhetorical strategies like proposals helped reinforce the course and using rhetorical analysis in different situations have become easier throughout the quarter. I believe that I have made sufficient progress towards becoming a better writer this way.
In summary, I had an enjoyable time in my first college English class. I pushed myself as diligently as I could and learned much more than I thought I would. In addition to, my strengths grew stronger and my weaknesses improved as well. I acknowledge I still have some techniques and skills to work on; however, I am willing to put the time in and cannot wait to take English in the future. Writing is an everlasting skill that will be an enormous asset to me; in addition to my future classes, and my career as
One skill that I wish I had time to improve on is citing sources in MLA style. Through the course, I refused to seek help from my professor until week seven, one thing I regret doing. that could have allayed the fear and doubt I had about this course. Any questions I had could be cleared up as the course progressed. My essays through the subsequent weeks have demonstrated my strength and weaknesses. I do not have many strengths when it comes writing, but still I consider my greatest strength in writing to be being able to clearly understand the prompt and answer it correctly, especially with the analysis essays. I think this is just because I spend most of the scarce time on hand just to think about the prompt, for example, when I was preparing for my rhetorical analysis essay on globalization I thoroughly read both article on globalization by both Kwame Anthony Appiah and franklin Foer .An obvious struggle I have as a writer is organization and transitions. I tend to jump from one topic to another and sometimes cover. I should have used more transitional words in between sentences and paragraphs to make my reader understand the logic of my paper. I have not had enough writing experience and the writing process is difficult for me. I do sometimes admit that it takes days to complete one assignment, but it will be worth it when I become a proficient
This semester was my very first semester as a college student. Being the first, it was probably the semester I would learn the most in. I learned the expectations for writing that I will have to live up to for the next four years of my college career. Though my high school teachers were usually demanding because I was in the Honors English section throughout high school, writing in college has still ?raised the bar? for me. Also, in high school, we would have weeks to pick a topic, create a thesis, outline the paper, write the paper, and then revise the paper. In college, the time restraints are not quite as lenient. I?ve had to learn to manage my time and be more productive with what free moments I have. Strangely enough, I?ve found the college English experience to be much more rewarding and enjoyable than in high school.
When first coming to school I thought the adjustment from being away from home would be a lot harder but over this semester I learned to
