On May 24, 1870 in the Georgetown section of Washington, D.C., little Ynes Enriquetta Julietta Mexia was born. Her father was a diplomat for the Mexican government. Ynes Mexia’s family had a long history in government. Her grandfather was a leader of Mexico’s Federalist Party and became a noteworthy contributor in the Texan history. Ynes had six step brothers & sisters from a previous marriage of her mother. Her parents divorced when Ynes was three. Ynes’ father moved back to Mexico City and her mother moved all seven children to Limestone County Texas
Mexía spent some of her childhood in Texas, but her education took her to several places. Her early education began at Saint Joseph’s Academy in Maryland and her secondary education took place in Philadelphia and Canada. When Ynes finished school, she moved to Mexico City and took care of her father for 10 years. While she was taking care of her father, she opened her own poultry business and married her first husband in 1897. Sadly, her first husband passed away in 1904. Ynes began attending University of California often dropping out and enrolling again from 1921 until 1938. She never quite finished her work to earn a degree. Ynes began to realize that social work might be her forte and she began to pursue it with great passion. It was not long before she realized her passion was in natural sciences especially botany. She tried to stay on course with her studies, but she often took long absences to persist in her love of botany.
Ynes Mexia’s story of her childhood does not portray the trouble she experienced she experienced in life. Her exploration of botany gave her a gratifying break and purpose in her life. Basically, she escaped into the tropical plants and due to her dogged study, she produced many new records and species. Today, botanists are still studying her
