Sookan changes many times throughout Year Of Impossible Goodbyes, realizing that neither peace or war can stay forever. This is shown when Sookan grandfather dies, when news of death comes after the war, and when the Japanese steal their machines. The first time you see this change is when Sookan’s grandfather dies. She sits on the stump of a tree that had once symbolized hope. “Harmony. That was the word he used. ‘Harmony will prevail,’ he used to say. ‘After darkness, there will be light. The light cannot come without darkness.’” (46 Choi) In this quote, Sookan is using the lesson of her grandfather to come over her grieving. She is convincing herself that the darkness of war is almost over, and happiness will come to her again. Another time this change is shown for Sookan is when the war finally ends. For a small time, peace feels like the happiest day of Sookan's life. That changes suddenly when news comes of everyone that was injured or died. “The dreams of a happy future together in a free land were shattered. The whole town was transformed into a hospital. “I sat helplessly in silence and watched the dawn break. The sun rose like any other day. It shone brightly, as if it knew nothing if our sadness. I felt the bright sun was heartless and cruel to shine so derisively, and I shut my eyes in defiance.” (63) This quote takes the theme a step further to show that no matter how sad you are, the light could come any day. I also think that Sookan is mad at the Americans for not rescuing them immediately. The sun is symbolizing the people that don't know how painful living in the war is, and are not taking action to help them. Sookan is shutting those people out because she has no hope, and is jealous of the happiness they
