Supervision plays a significant role in our internships and the work field in general. There are numerous roles that supervisors take on such as multiple caseloads, serve on committees, and maintain relationships with other agencies. Along with multiple roles that supervisors face also comes along with what kind of supervisor role they play. There are three components that supervision entails and those are: administrative, educational, and supportive. An administrative supervisor enforces agency policy, schedules work load, everyone’s working hours, billing, and paperwork. They are not only working on administrative work but also working on each individual client case which can be time consuming. Educational supervision includes reinforcing what you have learned in the classroom, enhancing and elaborating information as needed for that particular agency, and discussing cases. They are concerned with teaching knowledge, skills, and attitudes important to clinical assignments. Lastly, supportive supervisors offer advice to help you understand your feelings about the internship. Supportive supervision happens on a regular basis when employees need to change their work schedules because of a personal problem or have a family death. It sounds like a therapy kind of supervision but its focus is to enable the employee to cope effectively with their work. I see firsthand in a hospital how crucial supervision is. My supervisors are my go to people with any questions or needs that I have and without them I do not have a clue what I would do. This just goes to show how important they are in my internship. Between the three supervisions I see myself between administrative and supportive. I like the duties that an administrative supervisor takes on as well as a supportive supervisor does.
