How to improve work life balance for Employees - How Google does it? Work life balance is the concept that tells us to maintain proper balance between “work” and “life”. One should be able to strike a balance between one’s work and one’s personal life that includes family, friends, pleasure, leisure, development etc. Nowadays, there has been a shift in the workplace due to technological advancement. It is more feasible for employees to keep contact with work by the usage of smart phones and laptops. Employees may respond to a phone call or email even after work hours or during weekend. The boundary between work and personal life is blurred. The burred boundary leads to work-life conflict. Salary isn’t the only thing that matters to employees. They need the flexibility to earn a living and enjoy their life, simultaneously. So, employers have figured out the need to provide work- life balance in their organization. Though, there are no specific indicators to measure the work-life balance of employees, but it can be estimated by surveys and questionnaires which tell about the levels of stress in the employees and their willingness to continue a particular job. Employers often provide facilities such as work from home options, paid leave benefits, maternity leave, health insurance, pension plans after retirement, paid vacations etc. A flexible work schedule is one of the most desirable work- life balance tools. Employees are allowed to work evenings or weekends to complete a 40 hour work week, paid time for volunteering. Life services such as on-site daycare, dry cleaning and take-out dinner for late stays at the office, gym memberships and on-site workout facilities allow employees to better manage their per... ... middle of paper ... ... ‘INTERGRATORS’. Only 31% are able to separate their work life from their personal life and they are called as segmentors. They are the people who don’t have to think about their work while they are at home. The other kind of employees is the integrators, who are not able to separate work from personal life. Work appears constantly in background. They check their emails time and again to see any notification from work. 69% of people belong to this category. The line between their work-life and personal life is often blurred. With the aim to increase the percentage of segmentors among its employees, Google has asked them to leave their devices at office. These steps taken by Google are commendable as they help people enjoy their life free from work related worries and stress when they are not at work. That is why Google is known to have the best work culture.
