During his entire reign, Attalus maintained his position as the king against multiple enemies: Macedonians, Seleucids and Gauls etc. Many of them were much stronger than him territorially, politically and numerically. However, despite numerous setbacks he was able to establish the kingdom of Pergamum that was respected by both enemies and friends. Despite not having any legal claim on kingship from his birth, he was able to demonstrate by his achievements, especially military victories, that he was worthy of the throne.
