Why Vaccines Should Be Mandatory

Millions of children have died due to contagious, crippling diseases. These diseases are often passed on where there are many people crowded together, for instance, a school. As vaccines against many of these diseases have been developed, fewer and fewer cases of diseases such as smallpox, or polio have been reported. If the fact that these potentially life threatening diseases could be eradicated entirely or immunized against is widely known, why shouldn’t vaccines be mandatory? Vaccines should be mandatory due to the fact that they protect children as well as those that are immunocompromised, grant immunity to infectious diseases, and because they create a healthier environment for children. If there is an effective method for ensuring that these children don’t have to come into contact with these diseases, we should clearly advocate for it. All children deserve a healthy and safe environment. Author Chris Klicka contends the fact that vaccinations should be mandatory. He believes that it should be the parent’s choice to vaccinate, which is somewhat understandable, but what he does not understand or discuss is that the parent’s choice affects not only their children, but other children as well. He mentions the fact that homeschooled students should be given more leniency, that they shouldn’t have to get vaccines because they’re not around other children too often; however, these children are not confined to their homes for life, they interact with the outside world frequently. Even if they’re not in school, they could still pass on or be confronted with the disease.
